Critics Fear Reasonable Bay Diet Goals

Bay Journal, Bay agreement draft criticized as ‘weakening’ commitment

Proposed revisions to the plan that guides the Chesapeake Bay cleanup fall short of what many experts and environmental advocates want to see.

The draft document weakens several targets in place since 2014, including goals for restoring wetlands and establishing new public access points. Some goals provide only an X for amounts instead of real numbers, leaving crucial numerical objectives to be decided months or even years into the future. And, while many tasks face their own deadlines, there is no cutoff date by which the entire suite of initiatives must be completed.

“My initial thought was this was very incomplete,” said Keisha Sedlacek, senior policy director for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. “While the goals and outcomes included are the right ones, there is less accountability and detail than we were anticipating.”

The Chesapeake Bay Program, the state-federal collaboration that has overseen the cleanup since 1983, released an 18-page revised version of the 2014 Bay agreement for public comment on July 1. The program’s Executive Council is set to vote on a finalized draft in December.

Heaven forfend they should set goals that might be achieved.  Then they'd have to close up shop and go home.

Palm Sunday

Florida's iconic palm trees are under attack from a deadly disease that has already spread to more than half the state's counties, threatening millions of dollars worth of trees along major highways and in residential areas. Palm bronzing disease has been recorded in 36 of Florida's 67 counties, according to Brian Galligan, vice president of horticulture at the Naples Botanical Garden.
. . .
The disease affects at least 20 species of palms, but experts warn the threat could grow significantly as it spreads south into areas with greater palm biodiversity. "It affects at least 20 something species of palms, but as it comes further south, its host range is going to go up tremendously. Because we have much more biodiversity of palms in this area," Galligan said.

Unlike other palm diseases, bronzing is transmitted by a small insect called a leafhopper that feeds on the tree's sap. "It can then transport, transmit that disease to another palm," Galligan said. The disease progresses rapidly once a tree becomes infected. Symptoms include lower leaves turning brown and drooping fronds that give the palm an unhealthy appearance. "It only takes a couple of months until you see total decline and the entire bud, or canopy head of the palm will fall off. So, it could be quite dangerous," Galligan said.

Currently, only one treatment exists for palm bronzing disease, and it requires significant ongoing investment. The treatment involves drilling into the palm and injecting an antibiotic-like substance into the trunk. "That will stop it from getting infected, but you are talking every four months, for years on end. That's a lot of work," Galligan said.

Forget It Jake, It's Baltimore

Cam Edwards at Bearing Arm is outraged that a Baltimore Jury Hits Gun Shop With $62 Million Verdict in 'Ghost Gun' Lawsuit

Baltimore, working hand-in-hand, with the gun control group Brady, sued Polymer80 and Hanover Armory in June, 2022, a couple of months before Joe Biden's ATF began enforcing a rule treating "buy, build, shoot kits" as firearms that needed to include a serialized frame or receiver, even if it wasn't in completed form when it was sold.

The lawsuit was also filed on the same day that Maryland's ban on unserialized firearms went into effect, which helps to explain why Baltimore filed a lawsuit in civil court instead of the state's attorney general or Baltimore prosecutors filing criminal charges against the companies. Though the complaint accused both Polymer80 and Hanover Armory of violating numerous state and federal laws, no charges were ever brought against the defendants.

Polymer80, which is now defunct, ended up settling with the city for $1.2 million, but Hanover Armory decided to face a jury after settlement talks broke down. Not to Monday (or Thursday) morning quarterback, but that seems like a risky proposition given that the trial was held in Baltimore itself.

Until the day the lawsuit was filed, neither Maryland nor the federal government treated unfinished frames and receivers as "firearms", so both Polymer80 and the gun store were operating within the bounds of the law, despite claims to the contrary. Baltimore and Brady argued "the manufacture and sale of unfinished frames and receivers was regulated before June 1, 2022 as well."
. . .
But unfinished frames and receivers weren't treated as firearms by Maryland until June 1, 2022, so there would have been no reason (or way) for the Maryland State Police to consider an 80% frame or receiver for inclusion on the roster.

The city and gun control group also accused the defendants of creating a public health emergency by selling the "buy, build, shoot" kits, noting that "[b]efore 2018, BPD had never recovered a ghost gun,"and "[i]f current trends hold, BPD anticipates recovering 393 ghost guns in 2022."

So-called ghost guns, though, only comprised 14% of the total number of guns that were seized in Baltimore in 2021, and just 32 of the 345 ghost guns recovered by BPD were linked to a homicide or shooting that year. Homicides in Baltimore started soaring in 2015, years before the first "ghost gun" was seized by the BPD, so it makes no sense to blame either Polymer80 or Hanover Armory for creating a "public health emergency."

Unfortunately, there was virtually no media coverage of the two-week long trial, but it's hard to imagine that Hanover Armory could have found a jury pool that was willing to take an unbiased look at these facts. Based on the comments both before and after the trial by Baltimore officials and Brady's Kris Brown, though, I'm sure the jury was told they had both the opportunity and duty to hold Hanover Armory financially responsible for the violence in their city, and I'm guessing that argument was pretty persuasive given the size of the verdict.

Maryland, My Maryland

MSN, citing the Balmer Sun, Maryland at ‘high risk’ of recession, Moody’s top economist warns

Maryland is among 21 states and Washington, D.C., that are either already in or are at a “high risk” of a recession, according to a warning this week from the chief economist at the credit-rating agency that recently downgraded Maryland’s bond rating

The U.S. economy as a whole is “on the edge of recession” as a result of such a large number of states trending downward, Moody’s Mark Zandi wrote on social media Sunday.

“Based on my assessment of various data, states making up nearly a third of U.S. GDP are either in or at high risk of recession, another third are just holding steady, and the remaining third are growing,” Zandi wrote.

Moody’s is one of the top three credit-rating agencies and the only one that downgraded Maryland’s AAA bond rating this year. It said Maryland maintained a “stable” outlook but that its rating should take a hit because of economic underperformance and the higher-than-average impact from President Donald Trump’s decisions in the White House.
Of course yesterday's economic report, 3.3% growth, and 2% inflation, would seen to contradict that.
In his update Sunday, Zandi pointed to “the broader DC area” in particular because of Trump’s moves to slash the federal workforce — with Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C., joining the list with Maryland.

Other states that represent a similar or larger share of country’s GDP as Maryland — which Zandi noted as 1.86% — that are in or heading toward recession include New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota, Washington, Georgia and Oregon. California and New York, two of the three largest state economies, are “treading water” while states like Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania are expanding, according to Zandi’s analysis.

I think I'm seeing a pattern here.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Minneapolis Shooter Tired of Trans Life

From NYPo, Minneapolis school shooter Robin Westman confessed he was ‘tired of being trans’: ‘I wish I never brain-washed myself’. But it was so cool to be different in High School. Mary Chastain at LI, Minneapolis School Shooter Admitted He was ‘Tired of Being Trans’. At Althouse, "I only keep [the long hair] because it is pretty much my last shred of being trans. I am tired of being trans, I wish I never brain-washed myself..." "I can’t cut my hair now as it would be embarrassing defeat, and it might be a concerning change of character that could get me reported. It just always gets in my way. I will probably chop it on the day of the attack.... I don’t want to dress girly all the time but I guess sometimes I really like it. I know I am not a woman but I definitely don’t feel like a man." Wrote Robin Westman, more or less rejecting trans identity, quoted in "Minneapolis school shooter Robin Westman confessed he was 'tired of being trans': 'I wish I never brain-washed myself'" (NY Post). I don't understand why we are calling this person trans. If you're saying you "brain-washed" yourself, you've implicitly consigned the belief to the past. You might not reveal the loss of belief to others, but you've put it in writing — albeit in code — and we can read it. Why are people pretending to believe that he believed what he said he didn't believe? And he wrote it explicitly: "I know I am not a woman." Would you prefer him being called a failed trans? And "This kind of violence is very recent. It's a new thing in human history. There was no time in the past when people would walk into a church or a classroom and start shooting people.", ""It is not happening in other countries. It's happening here and we need to look at all of the potential culprits that might be contributing to that." Said RFK Jr. on "Fox & Friends" yesterday, when he was asked about whether "drugs" used in transgender treatment might have had a effect on the Minneapolis shooter. RFK Jr.'s answer broadened the topic to "SSRI drugs and other psychiatric drugs," some of which come with warnings about homicidal and suicidal ideation." He's not wrong to ask the question. Andy Ngo @MrAndyNgo "This is literally what the Minneapolis mass sh—ter of church children believed. In his manifesto, he has a page expressing some regret about transitioning (he was a minor), but that it was too late for him, and he was going to kill and die. Death before detransition."
