Maryland, My Maryland

Sara Dogan at Front Page calls the U. Maryland Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies  A Case Study in ‘Jew Hatred’

The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) at the University of Maryland has repeatedly promoted Jew hatred and demonstrated its disdain for academic neutrality by using official university channels to demonize Israel, condone Hamas terrorism, and delegitimize the world’s only Jewish state.

On October 13, just six days after Hamas’s barbaric attack that killed over 1200 innocent Israeli civilians in the most brutal ways imaginable, WGSS posted a statement on the official department website concerning “violence in Gaza and Israel.” The statement was attributed to the National Women’s Studies Association and was reproduced in full on the Maryland WGSS departmental page as an obvious show of solidarity and agreement with its precepts.

Instead of condemning Hamas for its brutal and unprovoked attack on Israeli civilians or excoriating their use of rape as a weapon of war, the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department attempted to whitewash the terrorist group’s action, urging that “The current escalation must be viewed in the context of decades of illegal Israeli military occupation and systemic violent campaigns.”

Using anti-Semitic language which demonized and delegitimized Israel, the world’s only Jewish state, the statement went on to condemn “the ongoing and persistent U.S. government’s support for Israel’s apartheid regime” and to characterize the Palestinians and Hamas as exemplars of “liberation and resistance movements led by other indigenous, colonized, and oppressed peoples everywhere.”

Lending a note of irony, the statement claimed that “As feminists, we recognize that violence and war often inflict gendered and sexualized harms on women and queer, trans and non-binary people.” It is clear from the context of the statement, that its authors believe such “sexualized harms” to stem from the actions of Israel, a laughable claim given that Hamas forces literally raped and mutilated women and children on video during the October 7th massacre and punish homosexuality in Gaza with death.

The statement also vowed its support for the genocidal and Hamas-directed Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel: “Today, we reaffirm our unwavering support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) resolution, which NWSA passed in 2015.”

Not content to let this tribute to Jew hatred stand on its own, approximately a week later, WGSS posted a second statement on the official department website “in solidarity with the people of Gaza.” The statement was attributed to the executive committee of the American Studies Association.

Making absolutely no mention of Hamas’s unprovoked atrocities on innocent Jews at a music festival and elsewhere in Israel, the statement instead alludes only to “the escalation of violence in Palestine and Israel” as if Hamas—which controls Gaza—was not the sole instigator of the recent barbarity. It goes on to explain that the organization “continues to stand with the Palestinian people and their ongoing struggle for liberation” and to offer “support [to] those who speak out against the intensifying onslaught on Gaza, whose destruction has killed nearly four thousand Gazan residents and displaced hundreds of thousands more.” Instead of condemning Hamas’s brutal terrorism and violence to civilians, the statement urges the “need to situate today’s events in a historical, political and regional understanding.”

Rather than demanding that Hamas immediately cease its genocidal war on Israel and the Jews—an objective stated plainly in the Hamas charter—the statement instead called for “an immediate ceasefire and release of humanitarian aid to Gaza” as well as for “the US to end support of Israeli apartheid and work toward negotiations.”

MDDNR Proposes To Throw Charters a Rockfish Bone

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has offered a compromise to one of the most contentious changes to the state’s striped bass regulations.

Charter boat operators say the modification “helps some” but they’ll continue to fight East Coast fishing regulators in court.

When striped bass were found to be overfished on the East Coast and fishery managers called for a reduced harvest, individual anglers in Maryland were hit with a one-fish-per-day limit. Charter boat guests, on the other hand, were allowed to take home two fish per day. The two-fish bonus for charters was offered as an incentive to reward captains for participating in the FACTS Charter Pilot Program. Those who reported their catches through the FACTS program would get to keep two rockfish per guest.

But this year, amid dismal juvenile rockfish numbers on the Bay, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) voted in January to tighten coastwide striped bass limits even further, leaving Maryland responsible for adjusting catch limits to fit the reduction.

The 2023 striped bass juvenile recruitment numbers were the second-lowest they’d been since 1957 in Maryland. And they were lower than usual in Virginia, too.

One of the steps Maryland proposed for 2024 was to eliminate the two-fish-per-angler charter exception. Charter captains didn’t take the news well. Rockfish is the biggest draw for Chesapeake Bay charter guests, and business owners said many anglers wouldn’t bother booking excursions for only one fish a day.

Two groups from the state’s charter fishing industry filed a lawsuit in March against ASMFC, calling the new limits “illegal, unnecessary and improperly premised.”

The Delmarva Fisheries Association and Maryland Charter Boat Association and two of their members had a preliminary injunction denied in the case, after a judge determined they would need Maryland’s Office of the Attorney General to get involved. They’ve appealed to the state and to Attorney General Anthony Brown, but so far the state has not stepped in on their case against ASMFC.

One of the members involved in the lawsuit, Severna Park, Maryland, charter captain Ken Jeffries from Sellfish Charters called the one-fish limit “just terrible”.

He and the other charter groups estimate their industry will lose 70 percent of its business over the tighter limits. He points to tackle shops that are closing and an increase of charter
captains leaving the business.

Jeffries says, “The DNR did support giving us a second fish,” but the natural resources department is tasked with imposing limits that accomplish ASMFC’s controls.

DNR attempted a compromise, announcing on Friday, “Starting with the 2024 open striped bass recreational season, the special harvester flexibility for the Charter Pilot Program has been modified.”

Under the modification, charter guests this year will still only get to keep one fish per person. However, charter captains participating in the FACTS catch reporting program will be allowed to land “up to two additional striped bass (one for the captain and one for a mate, if present, per day) in addition to their clients’ one-fish per person limit.”

So if a charter captain has eight guests on board, they can keep eight fish plus two for the captain and mate, for a total of 10 fish on the boat.

It's a bone, but it's not much of a bone. Looking at a charter captain like Pete, who typically takes 4 or 5 anglers per day, an additional 1 fish (ostensibly "his" fish, but the last thing he wants for dinner every night is rockfish), amounts to about a 20-25% increase in the "meat" landed, not enough to get excited about. A larger charter boat, which could carry 10-12 or even more anglers, but also has a mate, the situation is similar, but slightly worse. Now, a lot of Pete's anglers don't care if they can't keep the fish, he'll have no trouble filling his book, but the larger, head boat type charters will likely lose a lot of business. I don't see a way out of that, unless the state wants to subsidize the industry.

I still foresee another moratorium in our future.  Maryland’s Striped Bass Emergency Closure Continues into May. Fortunately, there are plenty of Blue Catfish to catch.

Forget it Jake, It's Baltimore

Pikesville High School Principal Eric Eiswert
From Brady Knox at WaEx, Baltimore principal was framed by school athletic director using AI to fabricate racist attack

A former Baltimore County athletics director was arrested after being caught using AI to frame a principal for making racist and antisemitic remarks.

According to the Baltimore Banner, Pikesville High School Principal Eric Eiswert was temporarily removed from his position after an audio clip surfaced appearing to show him making disparaging remarks about black students and the Jewish community. A police investigation found the clip was created using AI, the alleged work of embittered former athletic director Dazhon Darien, who was arrested.

Dazhon Darien

“The audio clip … had profound repercussions,” police wrote in charging documents, according to the outlet. “It not only led to Eiswert’s temporary removal from the school but also triggered a wave of hate-filled messages on social media and numerous calls to the school. The recording also caused significant disruptions for the PHS staff and students.”

Darien is also being charged with theft, retaliating against a witness, and stalking.

In January, an audio clip was published on the Instagram account murder_ink_bmore, appearing to show Eiswert saying that black students “couldn’t test their way out of a paper bag,” and that if he got “one more complaint from one more Jew in this community, I’m going to join the other side,” among other remarks. The post, made on an account with over 200,000 followers, garnered over 7,000 likes and gained the attention of the school.

Though Eiswert was briefly removed, authorities and AI experts soon began questioning the clip’s authenticity. In charging documents, police said that Darien had searched for OpenAI tools on the school’s network on several occasions. He was also connected to an email account that distributed the recording.

That certainly speaks of a level of tech savviness that I night not have expected from a Baltimore area jock.

Kill a Tree, Save a Stream?

Bay Journal, 'Chop and drop' tree felling aims to improve stream ecosystems in Pennsylvania

To the unknowing angler or backwoods explorer, stumbling onto the scene can be jarring: mature hardwood trees growing along the banks of high-quality streams, chain-sawed at their base and intentionally dropped across the water. Exposed root balls winch into the streambank. During high water, the obstructions shunt water out of the stream and onto the forest floor.

Is it eco-vandalism? No. It’s a carefully orchestrated and increasingly popular stream improvement technique embraced by public land managers and conservation groups in Pennsylvania.

The practice is known officially as “large woody material stream restoration” but more commonly as “chop and drop.”

Advocates say it is a valuable tool to help build populations of disappearing native eastern brook trout, boost aquatic insects, reduce stream erosion and sediment buildup, and to generally improve the stream ecosystem.

“It’s one of the most effective methods for habitat improvement,” said Luke Bobnar, watershed scientist for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. “I think it’s growing because we now have a cultural recognition that wood is part of a vibrant ecosystem.”

The conservancy has carried out chop-and-drop projects on 56 miles of streams in the Allegheny National Forest, state game lands and other places.

Trees and branches have been dropping generous loads of woody debris into streams, without help from humans, for all of Earth’s history — until the last few centuries, when old growth forests virtually disappeared in a geological blink of an eye. And even where second-growth forests have taken their place, the trees are not old enough to regularly supply woody material to the streams.

Enter chop and drop, where teams of trained workers armed with little more than helmets, chainsaws and perhaps winches trek deep into the woods, where heavy machinery can’t go. There, they restore a long-missing link to high-quality streams, especially in inaccessible and vital headwaters.

“What we’re trying to do with this process is replicate what an old growth forest would be doing naturally. We’re just speeding that up and accelerating the process,” said Michael Wright, who oversees resource management in the 90,000-acre Michaux State Forest in central Pennsylvania.

Allegheny National Forest staff and Pennsylvania chapters of Trout Unlimited were the pioneers for chop and drop in the state, treating more than 70 miles of streams in its only national forest. The work has attracted volunteer groups as well, such as Backcountry Hunters and Anglers.

Chop and drop is not a new concept. It has been around for 20 years or so, first used in Western states and now in the East. But only eight years ago, it was not permitted on Pennsylvania streams.

Advocates of the technique with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources persuaded the state Department of Environmental Protection to permit chop and drop by classifying it as fish habitat enhancement.

“You couldn’t do these activities before because there was no permit for it. Now it’s exponentially growing every year,” said Mark Sausser, stream habitat chief for the Fish and Boat Commission. “This opened up a huge amount of forested watersheds all over the state.”

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is inviting chop and drop on its high-quality streams on the 1.5 million acres of state game lands.

This almost makes too much sense to be carried out by a government agency.

Maryland, My Maryland

Maryland to mandate Climate Change indoctrination at public schools. Balmer Sun, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore issues executive order calling for environmental literacy

Gov. Wes Moore issued an executive order Monday establishing an environmental literacy program in an effort to empower Maryland youth to conserve and restore the state’s natural resources in the face of climate change.

“We owe it to the people of Maryland to keep our drinking water clean, keep our air safe, and preserve our national treasures — from the Western Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay,” Moore, a Democrat, said in a statement Monday evening.

Moore announced the creation of the Maryland Outdoor Learning Partnership, which is charged with conducting a review of climate change education efforts and providing recommendations to ensure students engage with the environment and have access to environmental education.

My experience with Maryland education, based on my children (who admittedly have been out of school for a good long time now), is that there is plenty of environmental propaganda already. The real trick will be to make the children of Baltimore stay in school to receive it.

But why hang yourself? Just log off and delete your account. A recent study found 74% of teenagers feel happier without their smartphones. Tattoo Thursday

TikToker Ash Putnam was frustrated after T.J. Maxx denied her application — and she thinks her tattoos were to blame.

Some of her visible designs include a skull with horns on her neck, solid black patches on her arms, and a pattern on her forehead. Putnam, 23, also has multiple facial piercings, including a large silver ring hanging from her septum.

"I hate that my tattoos are such a defining factor for me getting a job or not," she said in a recent TikTok. "Just because I have tattoos doesn't mean I'm not going to be a good worker."

Putnam, from California, said she went into the store to ask why she hadn't gotten the job, and the hiring manager told her she didn't have enough experience. The hiring manager also denied that her tattoos played any role in the rejection. T.J. Maxx did not respond to a request by Business Insider for comment.

MDDNR, ‘Women on the Water’ Fishing and Boating Workshop Offered May 9

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is hosting “Women on the Water,” a free introductory workshop on boating and fishing for women and girls aged 12 and older, at Seneca Creek State Park on May 9 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Participants who prefer to stay ashore can practice casting into the lake from shore.

The event is part of the department’s efforts to recruit and reactivate anglers and boaters. Registration opens May 1; more information is available online. Questions can be directed to Donna Morrow at donna.morrow@maryland.gov.

Sure, why not, it's already scary enough out there sometimes.

I mean, the fact that we are actually talking about this case being presented in a New York courtroom leaves me in utter disbelief. I mean, the arguments today did in fact capture all the problems here. You know, you had this misdemeanor under state law that had run out. This is going back to the 2016 election. And they zapped it back into life by alleging that there was a campaign finance under the federal laws that doesn’t exist.
