RIP: Kris Kristofferson

Variety, Kris Kristofferson, Country Music Legend and ‘A Star Is Born’ Leading Man, Dies at 8

Kris Kristofferson, who attained success as both a groundbreaking country music singer-songwriter and a Hollywood film and TV star, died Saturday at home in Maui, Hawaii. No cause of death was given, but he was described as passing away peacefully while surrounded by family. He was 88.

Said his family in a statement, “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 28 at home. We’re all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all.” The statement was offered on behalf of Kristofferson’s wife, Lisa; his eight children, Tracy, Kris Jr., Casey, Jesse, Jody, John, Kelly and Blake; and his seven grandchildren.
Variety doesn't do his life justice, but if Wikipedia is correct, he was a serious contender for world's most interesting man.
In 1958, Kristofferson was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford,  studying at Merton College. While at Oxford, he was awarded a Blue for boxing, played rugby for his college, and began writing songs. . . . This early phase of his music career was unsuccessful.[12] In 1960, Kristofferson graduated with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in English literature.
. . .
Kristofferson, under pressure from his family, joined the U.S. Army and was commissioned as a second lieutenant, attaining the rank of captain. He became a helicopter pilot after receiving flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He also completed Ranger School.  During the early 1960s, he was stationed in West Germany as a member of the 8th Infantry Division. During this time, he resumed his music career and formed a band. In 1965, after his tour in Germany ended, Kristofferson was given an assignment to teach English literature at West Point. Instead, he decided to leave the Army and pursue songwriting. His family disowned him because of his career decision; sources are unclear on whether they reconciled.
. . .
After leaving the army in 1965, Kristofferson moved to Nashville. Struggling for success in music, he worked at odd jobs in the meantime while burdened with medical expenses resulting from his son's defective esophagus. He and his wife divorced in 1968.

Kristofferson got a job sweeping floors at Columbia Recording Studios in Nashville. He met June Carter there and asked her to give Johnny Cash a tape of his. She did, but Cash put it on a large pile with others. He also worked as a commercial helicopter pilot for south Louisiana firm Petroleum Helicopters International (PHI), based in Lafayette, Louisiana. Kristofferson recalled of his days as a pilot, "That was about the last three years before I started performing, before people started cutting my songs. I would work a week down here [in south Louisiana] for PHI, sitting on an oil platform and flying helicopters. Then I'd go back to Nashville at the end of the week and spend a week up there trying to pitch the songs, then come back down and write songs for another week. I can remember "Help Me Make It Through the Night" I wrote sitting on top of an oil platform. I wrote "Bobby McGee" down here, and a lot of them [in south Louisiana]."

Weeks after giving Carter his tapes, Kristofferson landed a helicopter in Cash's front yard, gaining his full attention. A story about Kristofferson having a beer in one hand and some songs in the other upon arrival was reputed, but was later refuted, with Kristofferson saying, "It was still kind of an invasion of privacy that I wouldn't recommend. To be honest, I don't think he was there. John had a pretty creative memory." Upon hearing "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", however, Cash decided to record it, and in 1970 Kristofferson won Song of the Year for the song at the Country Music Association Awards. . . .
My favorite Kristofferson song:

Maryland, My Maryland

Hat Hair cites Fox, Oops: Larry Hogan's Senate Opponent Has Some Delinquent Payment Issues

Fresh off headlines that the Democrats' Senate nominee in Maryland received an improper tax credit, new documents indicate that Angela Alsobrooks also was late in paying thousands of dollars in homeowners association fees.

According to documents obtained by Fox News, Alsobrooks failed to pay $8,121 in homeowners association fees on time in seven cases from 2008 through 2021.

The fees, known as HOA fees, are usually assessed monthly or quarterly by a homeowners' association to pay for the services it provides.

Alsobrooks, the chief executive of Prince George's County – Maryland's second-largest county – faces former two-term Republican Gov. Larry Hogan in a competitive race to succeed Democrat Sen. Ben Cardin, who is retiring this year after serving nearly two decades in the Senate and nearly six decades as a state and then federal lawmaker.

Do you think she'll be as reluctant to spend taxpayers money as she is to part with her own?

I spent the morning on the phone trying to get a new cell phone set up, eventually, with the help of some foreigner, I succeeded and todays walk shows my first attempts at photography with it.
The tide is crazy high, thanks to Hurricane Helene, but I'm not complaining, if all we get is high tides, and some mist.

The Great Blue Herons were out in force. I also saw 1 Osprey over the beach. However, so far, no Hummingbirds have graced our feeder today.

Despite the high tide, I found 23 teeth, even though I was cut off from Matoaka, including this  decent Snaggletooth.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Back Through the Rain

Yep, we're back. A lot of driving through rain, the slight remnants of Hurricane Helene. No real issues, just a lot of mist and spray, and clouds in the higher passes on US 68.

Beach Reports 9/26/24

Today was a bookend of yesterday, mid 70s, overcast, and only moderately windy.

At mid tide, going down, the beach was mostly sandy.

Across the Bay. Marine Traffic identifies it as CG Eagle, a Coast Guard training ship with an interesting history:
Eagle commenced its existence in Nazi Germany as Horst Wessel, a ship of the Gorch Fock class. Horst Wessel was an improvement on the original design. She was larger in dimension and her spars were all steel, unlike Gorch Fock's wooden yards. SSS Horst Wessel began life as Schiff ("ship") 508 at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, Germany in 1936. . . She was the second ship in the class to be built, following the class namesake Gorch Fock. Rudolf Hess gave the speech at her launch in the presence of Adolf Hitler, and Horst Wessel's mother christened the new ship with a bottle of champagne.
Not a lot of teeth, 13 in all, but I thought I'd showcase this cute little Snaggletooth.

The Ospreys are still around. We're not sure about the Hummingbirds. We didn't see the female at the feeder this morning.

Update: Afternoon Hummingbird sighting.

Stacy McCain says STOP DOING THIS! "Look, I don’t want to name any names or call anybody out, but I am sick and tired of the defeatist negativity that crops up in the comments every time I blog about the election. Whenever I point to hopeful signs about November (as I did on Tuesday), the comments fill up with a chorus of doomsayers, declaring that there’s no way that any Republican can ever win anywhere because the Democrats are certain to steal the election. It’s “rigged” to the point of 100% certainty, proclaim the chorus of Eeyores, who always see the glass as half-empty and never let a glint of optimistic sunshine penetrate their preferred gloom of hopelessness. STOP IT!" WokeSpy finds a Historically Accurate Poll that Sees Republicans Lead Democrats In Party Identification. Ace, Gallup: The Polling Environment Is Very Favorable to Republicans "I haven't been covering the polls because a lot of them favor Kamala. Not all of them. There's not a clear advantage, really. But this Gallup polling is interesting. Gallup finds that its proxies for voter intention -- stuff like party identification, or answers to questions like "which party is better able to handle the most important issues?" -- all point to a Republican win (or, in a few cases, show no advantage for either party)." Oliver Wiseman at the Freep, Trump Should Be Running Away With the Election. Why Isn’t He? "Instead of working hard to convince voters Kamala Harris is unfit for the top job, the ex-president has wasted time on stupid stuff and bad stuff." Capt. Ed, "Trump has gotten distracted by irrelevancies. He's always had a discipline issue, and he's running against a campaign that knows how to provoke him. But I wonder if he's not doing better than people think . . . " Bob Graboyes at Bastiat's Window has a Presidential Election Pre-Postmortem, "Why wait till November to look back on what happened in the presidential election? . . . THE 2024 ELECTION IS OVER and [Donald Trump // Kamala Harris] has won. Or, perhaps it’s more correct to say that [Kamala Harris // Donald Trump] has lost the election, because after [Trump’s // Harris’s] stumbling, error-ridden campaign, it seems inappropriate to describe [him // her] as a “winner.” It was obvious from August on that [Trump // Harris] would defeat [Harris // Trump], and it’s astounding how wrong the political experts’ predictions proved to be." The defective ballots are being culled and disqualified. With the designation of “received” being placed on the ballots rather than “cancelled.” Elias and the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania on behalf of the Center for Coalfield Justice, the Washington Branch NAACP, and various Democrat interests have been appealing the identification and labeling of the (fraudulent) ballots. A court has granted Team Elias the ability to cure the ballot defect. Essentially, the voter is given the opportunity to fix the problem. [Story Here]"
