Oregon, My Oregon

Cam at Bearing Arms finds Oregon's Latest Gun Bill Is Even Worse Than Headlines Suggest

Most of the coverage surrounding the "Community Safety Firearms Act" approved by the Oregon legislature this week has focused on its ban on "rapid-fire devices", which are vaguely defined as anything that increases "the rate at which the trigger is activated.. to a faster rate than is possible for the firearm without the device; or the rate of fire increases to a faster rate than is possible for a person to fire the firearm without the device." The bill specifically bans bump stocks, trigger cranks ,hellfire triggers, binary trigger systems, burst trigger systems, as well as switches and auto sears, but could arguably trip up any gun owner who puts in an aftermarket trigger that has less pull than what comes standard on the firearm in question.

While that portion of the legislation is bad enough, it's far from the only onerous measure included in the omnibus gun bill.
It would also allow local governments to pass policies prohibiting people with a
concealed handgun license from carrying a gun into certain public buildings.

“A governing body that adopts such policy must post a clearly visible sign at all normal points of entry to the building and grounds and post a notice on the governing body’s website,” the bill says.

The bill also sets the implementation date for Measure 114, the voter-approved law passed in 2022 that bans purchases of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition and requires a permit before buying a gun.

In March, the Oregon Court of Appeals ruled that the voter-approved Measure 114 does not violate the state constitution. Barring further legal challenges, the law is effective March 15, 2026.

Democrats and advocates for stricter gun laws and regulations argued collectively the restrictions could help curb firearm fatalities and mass shootings in Oregon.

The idea that we can stop a mass shooting by simply putting up a sign telling people they can't bring guns inside is downright idiotic. But this is also a weakening of Oregon's firearm preemption law, and if local governments can ban lawful carryu in certain public buildings I suspect Democrats will soon follow up with legislation allowing localities to impose their own gun-free zones wherever they see fit.

It's equally stupid to believe that criminals are going to go through the mandated training and paperwork to acquire a permit-to-purchase a firearm instead of stealing one or buying one on the black market. The permit-to-purchase requirement is just another barrier placed in front of those trying to exercise a fundamental civil right by making it a more burdensome, expensive, and time-consuming process.

Banning arms in common use, like magazines that can hold more than ten rounds, is a flagrant violation of our Second Amendment rights. In order tor that measure to be upheld, judges have to write magazines out of the Second Amendment entirely by labeling them accessories or misrepresenting what the Supreme Court has said about protected arms, which is what U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut did two years ago in upholding Measure 114.
. . .
The Oregon State Supreme Court has yet to weigh in on the legality of Measure 114 under the state Constitution, and the federal lawsuit challenging Measure 114 is sitting in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Those lawsuits could still delay or derail the implementation of Measure 114 altogether, but even if that portion of SB 243 is put on hold there's plenty left in the omnibus gun bill approved by the legislature to impede and infringe on our right to keep and bear arms.

Back when we lived in Corvallis, Oregon, which has admittedly been a very long time now, it seemed to me to be the very essence of gun culture.  We routinely supplemented our diet with the abundant Black-Tailed Deer in the local coast range. My younger brother Ted even briefly owned a gun store in Lebanon, and we occasionally went to a local gun range and competed in metallic silhouette shooting matches. I was never really competitive.

It's sad to see Oregon go this route. I guess they should have put up that wall to keep us Californians out like they threatened.

Maryland, My Maryland

Tyler O'Neil at Da Signal, Supreme Court Rules on Parents’ Religious Freedom in LGBTQ School Book Opt-Out Case

The Supreme Court upheld the religious freedom of Maryland parents who challenged a school district policy that prevented them from opting their children out of lessons involving LGBTQ books. The court ruled, 6-3, that the Maryland parents were entitled to a preliminary injunction.

The case, Mahmoud v. Taylor, involved Maryland parents of various faith backgrounds—Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim—asking the court for a temporary injunction, allowing them to opt their kids out of instruction that utilize LGBTQ books that Montgomery County Public Schools has mandated schools teach.
. . .
Justice Samuel Alito delivered the Supreme Court’s opinion, in which Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett joined. Thomas filed a concurring opinion, and Justice Sonia Sotomayor filed a dissenting opinion, which Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson joined.

Ace gives it red italic font and the flaming skull, Supreme Court Rules that Public Schools Cannot Preach the Gay/Trans Agenda to Children Without Alerting Their Parents and Allowing Them an Opt-Out

You probably remember this dispute. Maryland, as deranged a progressive cesspit as there is, insists on teaching kids to be gay in grade school. Not middle school, grade school.

Initially, they permitted parents an opt-out of Lessons In Homosexuality, but then reversed themselves, denying parents that opt-out. It seems too many parents wanted to opt their children out, and that defeats the whole point of their gay and trans grooming.

Also, they said they couldn't just excuse kids when they were going to give lectures about changing your gender, because these lectures could come at literally any moment and who could plan for when teachers were going to start grooming children?

Which leads to a question that should be asked and answered: Just how often are teachers engaging in grooming behavior such that they cannot even say when the groomings will begin and end? Maryland's position seems to be that teachers are going to groom children nigh-constantly, so it's too much of a bureaucratic chore to excuse children every time a groomer teacher wants to tell them that gender is infinitely mutable and just "assigned at birth" as a guess by a bigoted doctor and isn't it wonderful to have gay sex?

The Court rejected these arguments, and found that bureaucratic convenience did not overrule the protections of the First Amendment, which guarantees parents the right to decide their children's religious upbringing.

And note that all parents are forced to pay for public school and also that schooling until age 16 (or whatever) is compulsory, so parents cannot just "remove their children from school," as -- guess who? -- Ketanji Brown Jackson asserted in oral arguments.

Good for the Montgomery County parents.

Virginia Ospreys in Trouble?

Nesting pairs of Osprey in 1987 and 2025
Chesapeake Bay Mag, Osprey Pairs Down to Single Digits on Ocean Side of ESVA

Dr. Bryan Watts, Director of the Center for Conservation Biology (CCB) at William & Mary, has released an inventory of active osprey nests along Virginia’s Eastern Shore Seaside. His report’s title tells the ugly story: “Osprey Population along the Seaside of the Delmarva Peninsula has Collapsed.” Where a CCB survey in 1987 recorded 83 pairs, this year’s survey recorded only nine pairs between Fisherman Island and the Chincoteague Causeway.

“We’ve been watching them since the 1990s,” Dr. Watts tells us, “ and the loss rate has really ratcheted up in the last few years.” This population collapse is a concern not only for the loss of an iconic, well-loved bird but also for what it says about the condition of this coastal environment that appears otherwise pristine.

Why the failure? Dr. Watts’s careful summary says: “The underlying causes of this population decline are unclear. Although there have been changes in nesting substrates (like duck blinds, dead trees, navigational aids, or nesting platforms) over time, the availability of nesting substrate does not appear to be a primary factor. Suitable structures remain widely available and many substrates that were used for extended periods are now vacant.

“It is possible that bald eagles may have impacted osprey along the seaside. The bald eagle population within the area has more than tripled since the 1980s. However, the density of eagles continues to be a small fraction of that found within the upper tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay where ospreys continue to thrive.”

That's interesting, I was just speculating about that a few days ago. Bald Eagle commonly rob Ospreys of their prey. Ospreys are great fisherman, but at some point, that has to impact the amount of food they can bring home to feed their chicks. And Bald Eagles seem even more efficient at stealing food from Ospreys than Ospreys are at fishing. I don't think I've ever seen an eagle fail to force an Osprey to drop it's fish.

He goes on to report, “The most likely cause of the decline is prey availability. However, no osprey diet studies have ever been conducted within this site, and we know very little about trends in fish availability. During the 1970s and 1980s, the highest density of nesting pairs was skewed to the southern portion of the area around Fisherman and Mockhorn Islands. These birds could be observed flying out to the mouth of the Chesapeake to forage. Pairs have declined by more than 90% within this portion of the study area.”

When looking for causes, questions arise about the availability of menhaden for ospreys to eat in the “southern portion of the area around Fisherman and Mockhorn Islands.” Some believe menhaden industry giant Omega Protein is competing with the ospreys for their food.

I'm beginning to believe the Osprey population in our Mid Bay region is following the same trajectory, just a few years later.  Our local Osprey population seems to have thinned. I only saw a single Osprey plying the waters off our beach today. There were plenty of peanut sized (2-3 inch) Menhaden dead on the beach, it doesn't seem like lack of them is the problem.

So, Stripped Bass are in trouble, crabs are in trouble, and the Ospreys are in trouble. I'm sure satisfied the with $25 billion or so we've dumped into the Bay's bureaucracy in the last 30 years.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Trump "Obliterates" Media Meme

Ace has a leftover from yesterday's news, Leftists Leak a Classified DIA Assessment of the Damage to the Iran Nuke Sites to Embarass Trump "Endless treason. Endless." I even left the misspelling in. Sundance hosts Secretary Rubio Affirms “Significant Damage” to Iran Nuclear Capacity in Wake of U.S. Airstrikes and Vice-President Vance and Secretary Hegseth Confront an Incurious, Manipulative and Deceitful Intelligence Community Media Operation. At PJM Scott Pinkser says Don’t Believe the Media’s LIES: Here’s Why Iran’s Nuke Program Is Almost Certainly Sayonara and Matt Margolis, Iran’s Stunning Admission That Proves Trump Was Right, CNN Most Hurt. "“The Iranian foreign ministry admitted that their nuclear facilities were ‘badly damaged’ by U.S. strikes over the weekend after reports surfaced about a low-confidence U.S. intelligence assessment suggesting otherwise,” National Review reports." Althouse focuses on the word "obliterate", If we take "obliterate" literally, it means to cause to disappear. "The media seem to be overeager to undercut Trump's accomplishment by saying that he said the word "obliteration" but there's actually — possibly — something left." AMAC asserts Liberal Meltdown Over Trump Iran Strike Will Alienate Americans. The Peacock whines House Speaker Johnson argues the War Powers Act is unconstitutional "Many constitutional scholars believe that the Nixon-era law, which limits the president’s power to unilaterally wage war, violates Article 2, Johnson said. “I think that’s right,” he added."

All the Supreme Leader's underlings needed to do was lock him in a bunker and take away his phone "for his own safety." Then tell anyone who asks that the Supreme Leader isn't meeting with anyone in person but they know his orders. It worked for Joe Biden."

Althouse and Sundance both post Trump's press conference at The Hague. Althouse catches the daddy scandal, "This is a great press conference. I've listened to it but don't have a transcript to quote yet.  ADDED: "Mark Rutte, the NATO Chief, he called you 'daddy' earlier.... Do you regard your NATO allies as kind of like children?"" Causing Rubio to crack up.

Breitbart Bus Dig, Jerome Powell: The Grand Speculator, "The Fed chair once warned against using speculative forecasts to drive policy. Now he’s doing exactly that. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell made a quiet but extraordinary admission on Tuesday: if the Fed were following the actual data, it would be cutting interest rates. But it isn’t—because the Fed expects President Trump’s tariffs to raise inflation, and it's choosing to act on that forecast instead." He just wants to cause Trump, and by extension us, pain as long a possible. NewsMax has a Report: Trump Naming Next Fed Chair Early to Weaken Powell. Hat Hair's Dave Strom thinks It Is Insane That There Is Opposition to Selling Less Than 0.5% of Federal Land. It's one way to improve the gene pool. "During a House hearing, Crockett decided that the "math ain't mathin'" when it comes to how the first lady, who is an immigrant, came to the United States. It's a story most people who pay attention know, and it's something Democrats have tried to poke holes in for years, but to use Ms. Crockett's terms, the math does math. The New York Times, of all publications, even laid out the validity of it in a 2018 article called "Did Melania Trump Merit an ‘Einstein Visa’? Probably, Immigration Lawyers Say," which you can find if you do a quick Google search."

"Code switching" is a common enough ploy on both sides of the aisle. Althouse has Let's talk about Zohran Mamdani. I'd avoided even making a tag for him, but times have changed and Donald Trump, AOC, and Mamdani are all from Queens. So now we know who really was Preznit? Matt Margolis at PJM says There’s A New Huge Twist in the Biden Autopen Scandal. In a jaw-dropping revelation that should shake every American to their core, former Biden advisor Neera Tanden has admitted under oath that she — not Joe Biden — was in control of the president’s autopen for nearly two years. A top White House aide, utterly unelected and unknown to most of the country, had the authority to affix the President’s signature to official documents, including sweeping executive orders and controversial pardons, all while the nation was led to believe these were the deliberate actions of the commander-in-chief himself. “As staff secretary, I was responsible for handling the flow of documents to and from the president,” she testified. “I was also authorized to direct that autopen signatures be affixed to certain categories of documents.""

Ace finds it a Shock: Crack Addict and Prostitute Addict With No Obvious Source of Income Doesn't Pay His Lawyers for Defending Him in Court "I think that this law firm knew all along it was working for free, in the interests of the Democrat-Media-Communist Party. The law firm that represented Hunter Biden in federal investigations filed a lawsuit against him on Monday, saying that former president Joe Biden's son owes its attorneys "substantially in excess of $50,000 in fees and interest." I would guess that $50,000 is the minimum amount of the claim needed to get into superior court or whatever. $50,000 should not be taken as anywhere near what Hunter the Crackhead owes. It's just that they have to note in their lawsuit that the money sought exceeds this threshold."

Alisha Lehmann
From GB News, 'World's sexiest footballer' suffers nightmare as Swiss women lose 7-1 to 14-year-old boys ahead of Euro 2025

Switzerland's women's national football team, including Alisha Lehmann who was voted 'World's sexiest footballer', suffered a crushing 7-1 defeat against FC Luzern's Under-15 boys' side during their preparations for Euro 2025. Switzerland are due to host the tournament next month, but have been left bitterly disappointed at losing the preparation game in such manner, with the Swiss Football Association trying to keep the result under wraps.

The embarrassing result emerged after footage from the behind-closed-doors friendly was accidentally posted on TikTok by one of the teenage players. The video garnered approximately 70,000 views before being removed from the platform.

So, they get to demand equal pay to the junior high school boys, am I right?
