Meanwhile, in the Redskins name controversy a letter to the editor of the Washington Post: Redskins name is not a divisive issue
What may appear on the surface to be a divisive and controversial issue isn’t. When seven to eight out of 10 individuals agree on something, it is not a divisive issue. It is not even an issue.
A December 2013 survey conducted by Public Policy Polling found that 71 percent of Americans were in favor of the Washington Redskins keeping the name. A July 2014 poll conducted by Research and Polling in New Mexico, in the middle of Indian country, received the same response: Seventy-one percent said the National Football League team should keep the name. Only 18 percent said it should be changed. And according to Research and Polling, there was no statistically significant difference in opinions among Hispanics, Caucasians or Native Americans. Two other national polls had very similar results.
The real issue is: How far do we allow political correctness to eat away at free speech? When we allow a few activists to hide behind politically correct words and phrases, we are allowing two or three people in 10 to determine what is correct for all of us. As an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe, I can tell you these activists do not speak for me and probably not for most American Indians. How dare someone speak truth to the power of the Washington Post!
Jeb Bush has added the Redskins to his stump speech
“This is not the worst time in American history,” Bush said early in his speech. “This is not the time to have people come and feed your angst or feed your anger. There’s a legitimate reason why people are angry. Look at Washington, D.C. You know, I was asked on a sports talk show, I was asked my views on the Washington Redskins. And I said look, you know, there’s a lot of big pressing problems here; I don’t think we need to be so politically correct, and try to, through government, take the name Redskins off. If that’s what they want, leave them alone, for crying out loud. Let’s worry about the complicated nature of our regulations and taxes and other things. And 4 minutes into the second half the Jets score a field goal. Tie game 13-13.
“And the Left went crazy, as you might expect, because they are a little more politically correct these days. And someone sent me an e-mail and said ‘Jeb, the term Redskins isn’t the pejorative; it’s Washington that’s the pejorative.’ If they’re going to change their name, I don’t know what you’d call it, Northern Virginia Redskins or something like that.”Jeb ain't my guy, but that's true.
Jets intercept a pass to Garcon at the 20ish, and get a chance to go ahead. They score on the next play on a run by Fitzpatrick. Kick is good. 13-20.
Redskins waste their drive, and the Eagles take over and score on a 35 yard run by Breeland. The kick is good 13-27.
Jets defense is tough. Cousins throws an interception to Gilchrist.
At the end of the third quarter, the Jets are ahead 27-13, on the Redskins 6 yard line.
And the Jets score yet again 34-13.
Jet's miss a 54 yard field goal.
Jets hold the Redskins off at the 2 yard line.
Redskins hold them near the goal, and block the kick and Ross recovers for a touchdown! Kick is good 20-34 Redskins with 4 minutes remaining.
Redskins Foster almost recovers the onside kick. but has it punched away, and Jets recover.
And the Jets run out the clock.
