If by just misses you mean 60 miles or more: D.C. skipped the rain, but not the humidity and waterspout
The torrential rains that flooded parts of the District on Sunday were absent Monday, but humid, moisture- laden air, suggestive of the tropics, remained in the Washington region, producing clammy conditions and another waterspout.Deal Island is on Maryland's Eastern Shore, south of us. In fact, we lie almost on the straight line between D.C. and Deal Island, and I didn't feel the slightest threat of a tornado yesterday. But wait, there was a threat a little closer to D.C.
The National Weather Service said Coast Guard personnel reported the spout, regarded as a tornado over water, near Deal Island, Md., on the eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay about 12:20 p.m. Monday.
On Sunday evening, a waterspout was spotted in the Back River area, near Baltimore. That might make it only 40 miles or so. The worst thing about a waterspout in Back River would be all the sewage it would drag up into the air.
