Maryland Watermen's Association President Passes Away

The long-time president of the Maryland State Watermen’s Association passed away yesterday at his home in Rock Hall. Larry Simms, 75, was president of the Annapolis-based organization for 40 years and was a fixture before the legislature, testifying on issues affecting his members and the Chesapeake Bay.

The association issued the following statement: “It is with deep sadness that we announce that Capt. Larry Simms, president of the Maryland Watermen’s Association, passed away on March 14. He was 75 and died peacefully at home with his family. Larry was president of MWA for 40 years and he was the only president the association ever had. He will be deeply missed by the Maryland seafood and commercial fishing industry, his network of friends and colleagues all across the country, his wife Carolyn, his children and grandchildren.”

Larry was a powerful advocate for the interests of the watermen in Chesapeake Bay, which is not necessarily the same thing as being a powerful advocate for the Bay itself.
