Fox 17, Nashville, '96 Nashville tanning salon double murder suspect convicted in new sex crime
It remains one of Nashville's most high-profile cold cases. Melissa Chilton and Tiffany Campbell, both 18, were heinously stabbed to death in the Nashville tanning salon where they worked, in February of 1996. Patrick Streater, a suspect who previously dated Campbell, was arrested years later, after advancements in DNA testing. But before the case went to trial, prosecutors dropped the charges, saying they weren't confident enough with the evidence to go forward.

Now, nearly three decades later, the man once accused in the "tanning salon" double murder case is now facing nearly 10 years in prison for a separate sex crime conviction in Washington state.
In January 2024, Streater was arrested again, this time in Seattle, and charged with attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment. Court documents say a woman escaped from Streater’s car, half-naked, and screaming that someone was “trying to rape her.” The woman reported Streater threatened he would “break your (expletive) face” while restraining her in the back seat. She was able to flee the vehicle using pepper spray and run into a nearby gym, screaming for help.

RIP: Claudia Cardinale
Claudia Cardinale, the Tunisian-born Italian star of The Leopard, 8 1/2 and Pink Panther, has died at the age of 87.
She had a six-decade long career, rising to fame during the golden age of Italian cinema, and was directed by greats such as Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti.
The actress died at Nemours in France in the company of her children, according to her agent Laurent Savry.
"She leaves us the legacy of a free and inspired woman both as a woman and as an artiste," Savry told AFP news agency.
Born in Tunisia to Sicilian parents in April 1938, Cardinale won a beauty contest at 16 that saw her declared "the most beautiful Italian woman in Tunis".
The prize was a trip to the Venice film festival, where she was approached by directors and producers to become involved in filmmaking.
She later described her reluctance to abandon her hopes of becoming a teacher to "give this cinema thing a go", in her father's words.
Her early career was marked by challenges. She was picking up small roles as a teenager when she was raped by a man she did not know.
When she learned that she was seven months pregnant while filming, a mentor convinced her to give birth in secret abroad in London.
For several years, she introduced her son, Patrick, to people as her younger brother. She
told French newspaper Le Monde in 2017 that he was the reason for her film career, because she wanted to "earn a living and be independent".
Because she had grown up speaking French, Arabic, and her parents' Sicilian dialect, her accent was seen as unacceptable, and her voice was dubbed by other Italian actors.
She shot to fame in 1963 when she appeared in Fellini's Oscar-winning 8 1/2 and the epic period drama The Leopard, which became a Visconti classic.
While shooting the films simultaneously, Cardinale commuted between Sicily and Rome, and said she had to dye her hair once a week.
"Visconti wanted me brunette with long hair. Fellini wanted me blonde," Cardinale said.
She worked in Hollywood in the 1960s, starring in Blake Edwards' The
Pink Panther and Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In the West, and appearing with actors including Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson.
During her time in the US, Cardinale had spoken of pretending to be in a relationship with the actor Rock Hudson to try to keep his homosexuality a secret.
"At that time in America if it was known that you were gay you could not work in Hollywood," she told Variety in 2017.
Not a bad run.

John Sexton at Hat Hair, A Foster Care Scandal in Maryland
Last week the Office of Legislative Affairs for Maryland's General Assembly released a 70 page report which documented a real scandal taking place within the state's foster care system. There are over 13,000 children in this system but in Maryland it was so poorly run that some of the kids were being placed in homes with convicted sex offenders.Auditors found seven people on the Maryland Sex Offender Registry whose listed addresses were the same as approved “guardianship homes” where a total of 10 children were living...This seems like the most basic and obvious check a foster care system should be running but in Maryland it apparently wasn't happening. Even in cases where a home was checked once, there was no follow up later to see if any new adults had moved into the homes.
In one case, an individual convicted of sexual misconduct with a minor had the same address as a home where four children between the ages of 4 and 8 were living, according to the report.
And in another case, auditors found an employee of a group foster home who was on the Maryland Sex Offender Registry after being convicted years ago of sexually abusing a child. The employee “allegedly transported three foster care children for an inappropriate activity” and an investigation determined “there was evidence of abuse.”
The system was also supposed to do follow-up medical checks on children but fell behind in hundreds of cases.State regulations require foster children to have a health assessment within 60 days of entering the system, and annual medical exams and dental exams every six months after that.Hundreds of children were being placed in hotels rather than in homes. The cost for caring for those kids was exorbitant and the staff working with those kids were also not being given background checks.
As of May 2024, 540 children had not received a medical exam in the prior year, and 110 of them hadn’t had a medical exam in multiple years.
And 1,635 children hadn’t had a dental exam in the prior six months, including 140 who had never had a dental exam.Under the supervision of the unlicensed vendors, the agency placed 280 foster children in hotels, some for as long as two years.That wasn't the only case of financial failures associated with the system.
According to the report, those placements increased the level of risk the children faced and cost the state dramatically more than traditional foster care.
Daily costs for one child are said to have reached $1,259, compared to $281 for a treatment foster...
These vendors were tasked with daily supervision, transportation and medical assistance.
One vendor employed an individual convicted of murder in 1990, raising additional concerns about oversight.Beyond safety, the audit pointed to chronic management problems. The agency reportedly failed to implement a comprehensive quality assurance program across Maryland’s 24 local social service departments and struggled with its case management system (CJAMS), which didn't flag inaccurate or missing data.As I said, it's a genuine scandal. The state assembly has called for hearings into the matter. Department of Human Services Secretary Rafael López, who is in charge of the program, is facing DUI charges after he was seen running a red light in January and swerving across the road.
Financial failures cost the state millions. SSA reportedly didn't look into or recover $34.5 million in overpayments and was fined nearly $700,000 for falling short of federal foster care standards. From federal funding, SSA lost out on at least $2.6 million in federal reimbursements because the audit says the agency didn't apply for them, and potentially further lost out on up to $23 million because eligibility determinations weren't done correctly or on time.

Inner Harbor tourists gawked at the aftermath Tuesday: thousands of dead Atlantic menhaden floating on the surface.
The aquatic annihilation — and its lingering stench — is a reminder of the challenges facing the harbor and the broader Chesapeake Bay.
State regulators say no single pollution event caused this fish kill, but point instead to decomposing algae and other organic material — the result of widespread nutrient pollution from runoff and wastewater overflows that has depleted oxygen in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries for decades.
Close to 25,000 fish have died in the event, according to the Maryland Department of the Environment, whose inspectors evaluated the area Monday. The fish kill stretched all the way around the harbor, from Canton through the Inner Harbor to Locust Point, agency spokesman Jay Apperson said.
This week’s carnage comes about a month after a sudden dip in temperatures seems to have triggered two even bigger menhaden die-offs in the harbor. Unseasonably cool late August temperatures helped to deplete oxygen that bay denizens need to survive.
25,000 isn't a lot of Menhaden when it comes to supporting all the Ospreys, Striped Bass and Bluefish that want to eat them, but when they're dead and rotting on your beach, they sure do stink.

An explosive lawsuit alleges that the children of Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) tormented their mother’s personal assistant so severely that he ultimately took his own life.
Brandon O’Brien, 35, worked for Wyden’s wife, Nancy Bass Wyden, from June 2022 until September 2024. Court filings say O’Brien was “frequently tasked” with caring for the senator’s young kids, including chauffeuring them to school in New York City and even supervising them on family trips to Disney World. Instead of gratitude, the lawsuit claims, he endured relentless abuse from the children that drove him to suicide.
The New York Post has the details:The disturbing behavior began in September 2022 when the couple’s then-10-year-old daughter allegedly exposed herself to O’Brien, making “sexually explicit” comments and asking about his “intimate life” during school drop-offs, O’Brien’s husband, Thomas Maltezos, alleged in court papers he filed against Bass Wyden and her company, Bass Real Estate LLC.This is not normal behavior for children. Where did they learn such behaviors and attitudes from? And more importantly, why didn’t it stop? According to the New York Post, Wyden’s wife “allegedly did nothing about the behavior,” according to Maltezos.
Ron Wyden was a representative for parts of Portland from 1980 to 1996, when he was first elected to the Senate. He was pretty well know as an up and comer when we left Oregon in 1983. I hope this all isn't true, but, well, Portland.
