At just over thirty years of age, Lina de la Parra is already a great symbol, thanks to the popularity she has had in the Colombian bands she is part of, such as Kilcrops and Highway . She is one of the female rockers in Colombia who remains current, even after metal in Colombia is a rather difficult subject for its creators.

Born in Bogotá, Lina de la Parra, who from a very young age was dedicated to classical ballet and studied at a girls' school, would surprise her family from one moment to the next by preferring to lean towards the sound of the best metal bands.

In what one could say is another sign that coastal fisheries are changing, cobia shared top billing at the summer meeting of the East Coast board charged with managing 27 nearshore fish species.

Yes, cobia, that solitary predator that graces the Chesapeake Bay from late spring until early fall. Each summer, the “man in the brown suit” punishes reels and anglers, but in a good way.

Angler interest in catching one of these angry piscatorial missiles has grown mightily in recent years. And along with red drum, the Chesapeake cobia fishery has arguably replaced the once abundant striper as the most sought-after trophy fish in the bay.

To that end, staffers and technical folks at the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission wanted members to get on the same page — not just regulation-wise, but also to hopefully reduce uncertainty by using harvest estimates based on a larger sample size combining multiple states in a region, instead of the state-by-state method that had been used.

Some board members wanted to hit the pause button until a stock assessment is complete. (Let me interject that a decent argument could be made that kicking the proverbial can down the road is not just common practice at the ASMFC, it is an institutional pastime. I kid, sorta).

Others expressed concerns that not acting now might create management whiplash. In the end, commissioners elected to move forward, cobbling together a Frankenstein-esque set of measures.

Cobia are a rare, but perhaps increasing, summer migrant into middle Chesapeake Bay. In recent years, with Striped Bass fishing being severely limited, recreation fishing interest in Cobia has increased. But still, they are rare, and to catch a few Cobia requires a lot of commitment of time and boat fuel.

Right now, Cobia regulations in Maryland allow anglers to keep 1 per day over 40 inches or 2 per boat from June 15–September 15. Given the few actually being caught, I doubt the Maryland catch has much impact on the coast wide population. I've never caught one, but I was on the boat when Pete and Mike Nyalko each caught one (under the 40 inch limit). We also saw one get caught yesterday, but we were in Virginia waters.

MDDNR, Chesapeake Bay Hypoxia Report – Early Summer 2024

Data collected by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Old Dominion University show a higher than average volume of hypoxia—waters with less than 2 mg/l oxygen—in the Chesapeake Bay mainstem of Maryland and Virginia in early June, that improved to less than average size in late June though late July.

It's been dry this summer. Good for anoxia.

I'm Back!

Sunrise found us at Mike's Rock off of Hoopers Island.  Striper were biting there on topwater, but not getting hooked. I did manage one in the size range (19-24 inches) but it had skin disease and we threw it back

When he put up the walk-on trip Pete said he intended to run hard south to seek large Bluefish, and Redfish that had been in the area. Here we were at a wreck off Tangier Island, the furthest south I have ever fished with Pete from Solomons. We found Bluefish, but not the giants, as well as some keeper Redfish (I got one)

We stopped at Smith Point Light on the way home, where the Potomac River comes into the Chesapeake Bea.

We did find some blues there, but the big story was this 47 inch bull redfish, caught by Brooks,

People, Paralympics Drops Ban on Olympic Rings Tattoos

Paralympians will no longer have to cover their tattoos of the Olympic rings logo, the committee that oversees Paralympics ruled.

On Friday, Aug. 23, The New York Times reported that the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) had changed its long-standing policy requiring Paralympic athletes to cover up tattoos that featured brands or logos — including the Olympics rings. In the past, if athletes didn't cover their tattoos during events, they would face penalties, including disqualification.

Now, the IPC has reversed that rule. Craig Spence, IPC’s chief brand and communications officer, told the Times that Paralympians with the rings logo tattooed on their body don't have to cover them up, but he didn't offer an explanation as to why the committee had decided to change its policy.

“Athletes with such tattoos do not need to cover them up,” he said.

MD Counties Propose Bay Passenger Ferry Network

Bay Journal, Maryland counties push Bay passenger ferry. Will funding follow?

A new Chesapeake Bay passenger ferry service could attract tens of thousands of users in its first year, but it would run in the red while doing so, according to a study backed by a coalition of coastal Maryland counties.

The 114-page study, released Aug. 15, suggests that 50,000 passengers would take rides in its first season, operating over 26 weeks from mid-April to mid-October. That’s based on boats traveling along six proposed routes between the Bay’s Western and Eastern shores.

Under that scenario, the system is expected to generate $2.5 million in revenue during that season, according to study author Cambridge Systematics, a Massachusetts-based transportation consultant. But the expenses would add up to $5 million from paying off the vessels, operating the system, maintenance and other costs.

The proposal’s backers say the study underscores the need to develop a viable transportation alternative for crossing the Maryland portion of the Bay. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, part of U.S. Routes 50/301, is the lone highway connection between the two shores, spanning the water between Kent Island and Annapolis.

“We are optimistic about the study results and the path forward, which could better connect our Chesapeake Bay destinations and create economic impact across the entire state,” said Kristen Pironis, executive director of Visit Annapolis & Anne Arundel County, one of the counties supporting the effort. The others are Calvert, Queen Anne’s, Somerset and St. Mary’s.

The system could expand to 21 stations in the future, according to the proposal.

The report envisions using a fleet of two 149-passenger catamarans and five 49-passenger catamarans, powered by diesel or diesel-electric hybrid engines. The service likely wouldn’t be feasible for commuters, though some may take advantage of it in Baltimore and Annapolis, the authors say in the report. It would be open only to passengers and not their vehicles.

The focus is on recreation and tourism, advocates say. By enhancing water-based transportation, the service would boost economic growth, the report argues. The service would be expected to support 143 jobs and $14.5 million in economic effects.

The average roundtrip fare would be $50, the study put forward.

Sounds like fun, if the schedule is such that you could go from Solomons to Cambridge, St. Mary's City or Crisfield and home in a day.
