Whew, Chessie Gets Home Safe
Chessie, the manatee that gained fame for making sporadic visits to the Chesapeake Bay over three decades, has made yet another reappearance, easing fears that a possible alligator attack last summer had done him in.
Chessie, a manatee who has occasionally visited the Chesapeake Bay, is scanned for a passive integrated transponder tag. PIT tags, commonly referred to as microchips, are about the size of a rice grain and are widely used by veterinarians to help identify lost pets and return them to their owners. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
When his satellite tag stopped transmitting last June in waters near Jacksonville, FL, scientists suspected that an alligator or a boat had damaged it. For more than six months, Chessie’s whereabouts were unknown.
Manatee swimming with Mermaids |
But on Tuesday, Jan. 25, an underwater microphone deployed by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium detected a separate — and apparently still-operative — tracking device attached to the 1,500-pound mammal. The sonic transmitter showed that Chessie was basking in the warm discharge from a power plant in Fort Lauderdale, more than 300 miles south of his last known location.
The aquarium’s staff hurried to the canal. They located the manatee and fastened a fresh satellite tag to him, according to the nonprofit’s press release. The tag allows researchers and the public to track Chessie’s movements remotely.
Chessie getting measured and photographed |
Scientists estimate the manatee to be at least 35 years old. His lifetime has been marked by a dramatic series of appearances and disappearances, beginning with his sighting in the Chesapeake Bay in 1994. That was the first time a manatee had been spotted in Maryland waters. He bypassed the Bay during his northward trek the following year but ventured as far north as Rhode Island, adding another first to his ledger.
He popped up in the Bay again in 2001 and 2011. But then he was off the grid until he was recovered in February 2021, emaciated and suffering from pneumonia. Unlike hundreds of Florida manatees that have died of starvation amid a recent mass die-off of seagrass, Chessie survived.
To my great regret, I missed Chessie when he stopped for a short visit in the local harbor in 2011.

Grading Yourself is Tough
If you give yourself too good a grade, and people will think your cheating; give yourself too bad a grade and they might thing you aren't trying very hard, and not give you more money to do what your doing. A B- seems about optimal to say we're trying hard but we need more help! WTOP: Maryland gives itself B-minus for adapting to climate change in coastal areas
So how is Maryland doing when it comes to confronting the rising temperatures, stronger storms and increased flooding already being experienced due to climate change?
The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) has collaborated with the Adaptation and Resiliency Work Group of the Maryland Commission on Climate Change and the Department of Natural Resources on a first-of-its-kind report card that gives a snapshot of the current adaptation status in Maryland’s coastal counties and establishes a framework for measuring future progress.
. . .
The report card, which was released Friday, gives the state an overall grade of B-minus. However, the review outlined several shortfalls that could lead to more significant damage.
“Some indicators that were measured already meet, or are close to meeting, current adaptation goals, while others require significant investment to achieve adaptation goals,” the scientists and researchers who compiled the report wrote.
The report card comes as the General Assembly prepares once again to consider aggressive legislation to address climate change in the state. The Senate and House could not agree on the best approach to the legislation in the final hours of last year’s legislative session.

PM, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown pushes executive clemency for criminals despite rise in violent crime
Oregon’s Democrat Governor Kate Brown has made a push for clemency towards criminals, prompting outrage among state prosecutors due to her refusal to address the surge in violent crime.
Prosecutors argue that the Governor’s efforts to use executive clemency is making it difficult for them to put dangerous criminals in prison.
"This is the massive release of violent criminals through a process which violates the legal requirements of law," stated Kevin Mannix, the president of Common Sense for Oregon and the lawyer whose firm is bringing a lawsuit against Gov. Kate Brown on behalf of two district attorneys and the families of three murder victims, Fox News reported.
Portland, Oregon’s largest city, saw a massive surge in violent crime, particularly homicides. In 2021, the number of homicides in the city went up to 85, up from 57 I n 2020. There were only 36 murders in 2019, and 26 in 2018. The number is not expected to fall.
Mannix and the plaintiffs he represents argue that the 1,000 convicts Brown released from prison early after March 2020 have contributed to the state’s rise in crime.
"Recidivism, or repeat conviction rate, for violent criminals is at least 40%," Mannix said to Fox News. "Sure, we try to rehabilitate people. We try to change their lives, and we should keep trying. But the prediction I would make is that 40% of these violent criminals are going to commit another violent crime."
They voted poorly.
So how's that Greater Idaho movement going?
In a Fit of Mass Formation Psychosis, Justice Breyer Says Sayonara
Sorry about the title, but Stacey wanted to know if We Can Make Thursday ‘Everybody Blog About Mass Formation Psychosis Day’? (followed up with ‘Mass Formation Psychosis’ and the Censorship of COVID-19 Criticism). I'm not really all that keen on the term myself, which seems to describe media and goverment lead, global gaslighting of whole populations of susceptible people. As such, it can relate to almost any topic. I don't much worry about the WuFlu anymore. Omicron is the cure; if you're not highly vulnerable, catch it.
Say, Justice Breyer resigns. Bravo! No Dissent Permitted
Bravo has fired Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Jennie Nguyen over posts she shared on social media calling out the Marxist, far-left organization Black Lives Matter and slamming rioters amid the summer 2020 riots that spread across the country after the death of George Floyd.
“Bravo has ceased filming with Jennie Nguyen and she will no longer be a cast member of ‘The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,'” Bravo said in a statement. “We recognize we failed to take appropriate action once her offensive social media posts were brought to our attention.”
“Moving forward, we will work to improve our processes to ensure we make better informed and more thoughtful casting decisions,” the statement said.
Bravo appeared to be reacting to woke mob pressure demanding the network fire Nguyen after they discovered the Real Housewife star shared conservative memes in 2020.
One meme allegedly shared by Nguyen read: “If you follow the officers orders, you won’t get shot,” according to a report by Page Six.
Another meme read: “I’m sick of people saying cops need more training. You had 18 years to teach your kids it’s wrong to loot, steal, set buildings a blaze, block traffic, laser people’s eyes, overturn cars, destroy buildings and attack citizens. Who failed who?”
A third meme allegedly shared by Nguyen reads as follows:Hundreds of blacks shot and many killed (including children) by other blacks every week. Over a thousand Officers violently injured, some permanently, by rioters. Anarchists rioting in major cities every night, which has caused billions of dollars of destruction to private and public property. And you still think Police Officers are the problem. You are an idiot.Nguyen is a Vietnamese immigrant who escaped communism, noting in an episode of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City late last year: “I lived through the war and so because of the Communist country, we need to just escape.”
Jen Shaw |
While Nguyen has been fired for sharing conservative memes, Bravo appears more lenient for its cast members who get arrested for allegedly engaging in fraudulent schemes. Last year, Real Housewives star Jen Shah was arrested during the filming of season two, reports Us Weekly.
“Jennifer Shah, who portrays herself as a wealthy and successful businessperson on ‘reality’ television, and Stuart Smith, who is portrayed as Shah’s ‘first assistant,’ allegedly generated and sold ‘lead lists’ of innocent individuals for other members of their scheme to repeatedly scam,” Manhattan U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said.
“In actual reality and as alleged, the so-called business opportunities pushed on the victims by Shah, Smith, and their co-conspirators were just fraudulent schemes, motivated by greed, to steal victims’ money,” Strauss added. “Now, these defendants face time in prison for their alleged crimes.”
Shah was able to resume filming for season two just one month after her arrest.
So, actual criminal behavior is OK, but expressing dissent from liberal orthodoxy is verboten. Got it.

The Dundalk Eagle, State sues city over Back River, Patapsco sewage plant pollution
State environmental regulators last week filed a lawsuit against Baltimore City alleging environmental law violations at the city’s two sewage treatment plants, claiming the over-polluted discharge the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant has “contaminated the surface waters of Back River and Bear Creek.”
The Maryland Department of the Environment is asking a judge to order the city into compliance with their pollutant discharge permits, and to fine the city up to $10,000 for each of thousands of days worth of alleged violations at the Back River plant, which is located within Dundalk but is city-side property, as well as the the Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant in Wagner’s Point.
In the lawsuit, the state accuses the city of breaking their sewage discharge permits’ limits on discharging pollutants into waterways, as well as failing to report both non-compliance with their permit and sampling results.
The complaint also accuses the city of improperly testing samples, failing to conduct necessary maintenance and not keeping an adequate staff at the plants. During a June inspection at the Back River plant, state regulators discovered that out of the 76 operators there, only two had a permanent license, with the rest holding temporary licenses.

Baltimore police said a man was shot in the face in northeast Baltimore overnight while he was sitting in his vehicle.
The 57-year-old victim had run out of gas at about 3:04 p.m. on Kirk Avenue near Montpelier Street.
An armed man approached him and ordered him out of the vehicle. When the victim refused, the suspect shot him in the face.
The victim is expected to survive; he was taken to an area hospital.
He was one of three people shot in the city since Monday evening.
Which begs the question, what was he doing in NE Baltimore?

Maryland, My Maryland
Da Caller, National Democrats Intervene To Protect Gerrymandered Maps In Maryland
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is preparing to wage a legal battle to protect gerrymandered Congressional maps in the state of Maryland, Fair Maps Maryland announced Monday.
According to Fair Maps Maryland, an organization aligned with Republican Gov. Larry Hogan which seeks to end partisan gerrymandering in the state, the DCCC filed a motion to intervene in ongoing litigation over Democrats’ proposed Congressional maps. If granted, the DCCC would become a legal defendant in the case on the side of defending the gerrymandered maps.
The motion was filed by attorney Marc Elias, former general counsel to the 2016 Hillary Clinton campaign and founder of Democracy Docket, a website dedicated to covering election law news from a progressive perspective.
Elias has been an outspoken critic of gerrymandering done by Republicans in states like North Carolina, but would now be defending gerrymandering done by Democrats if the motion to intervene is granted.
Marc Elias is a Clinton crony and also a principle in the creation and promulgation of the Russiagate hoax. He and the DCCC should mind their own damn business. But this gives me some reason to suspect that there's a chance (however small) for gerrymander reform in Maryland. If not, they wouldn't have bothered.

The tide was low, but not very low (we walked at astronomical low tide, but the tide was elevated due to previous south winds.)
These are nearly perfect conditions for fossil hunting. A lot of beach exposed, enough surf to move it around, but not enough make it too hard to see and grab things. Also, I think overcast lighting is better than winter's slanted sunlight, with casts a lot of black triangular shadows.

James, Barren Island Restoration Going Forward
Da Balmer Sun, Chesapeake Bay island construction, key to slowing Eastern Shore erosion, gets $38M in new federal infrastructure spending
A project to rebuild two vanishing Chesapeake Bay islands — and thereby slow erosion along some of Maryland’s most vulnerable coastline — will receive $38 million under recently approved federal infrastructure spending, officials announced Thursday.
The money will go toward Army Corps of Engineers work to begin restoring Barren Island and to complete engineering fieldwork, drilling and testing on James Island. The islands off Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and others in the middle portion of the bay, have lost more than 10,000 acres of land mass since the late 1800s, according to the agency.
James Island in 2016 |
The projects also are considered key to the success of the Port of Baltimore, because the islands are being reconstructed using material dredged from the bay’s shipping channels. More space for the dredged material is needed as the port upgrades and maintains berths and channels to accommodate increasingly larger cargo ships that could otherwise call on other East Coast ports.
James and Barren islands long helped protect Dorchester County shores from Chesapeake Bay winds and waves, but as they have diminished, land loss has accelerated on the mainland. In Dorchester, shorelines have receded by as much as 600 feet over the past four decades, and with much of the county at just a foot or two above sea level, more losses are expected.
Looking across Barren Island in 2016 |
James Island shrunk by more than half from the mid-1800s to the 1990s, from 1,300 acres to 550, but is planned to be expanded to nearly 2,100 acres eventually. Barren Island is expected to grow to 72 acres of wetlands. Work on Barren Island is expected to start in September, while James Island construction is scheduled to begin in 2024.
The projects are expected to cost $1.7 billion over 30 years.
I look forward to fishing the rip rap walls on the restored James Island. But bare in mind, this isn't really about restoring the islands, it's finding a place to dump the dredge spoils from Baltimore Harbor.
