11/30/20 Beach Report

Skye and I waited until after lunch to take a walk, hoping for the rain to clear. We had one shower on the way down, as we were about to come into the marina.
Despite a very high tide (and rising) and not being able to cross the stream to Matoaka even in my boots, I managed find six fairly ordinary shark's teeth. You can see a pretty significant rain storm passing to our north.

For the first time in quite a while I found the Great White Heron that Georgia has affectionately dubbed Whitey, sitting in a tree over a house on the beach.

Georgia picked Skye and I up at the beach parking lot, and it's a good thing, because it thundered and rain hard on the short drive home.

Prehistoric baby sharks were raised in NURSERIES 16 million years ago, fossilised megalodon teeth reveal

Ancient giant predatory sharks made use of nurseries to rear their young millions of years ago, according to a new study investigating fossilised megalodon teeth.

Five potential nurseries, dating from 3.6 to 16 million years ago, have been identified by University of Bristol researchers using fossilised teeth of different lengths.

Slow to reproduce, megalodon nurseries likely contributed to the success - and later demise - of this iconic top predator, the authors discovered.

Some of the better Meg teeth
 in our collection.
They examined nine areas where megalodon remains have been found, and say five may have been nurseries, because most of the remains found there were from newborn or young juvenile animals.

Raising these ancient baby sharks in this way may have improved survival, but it may also have contributed to the demise of the monster sharks, they say, as a lack of suitable nursery sites could have contributed to their extinction.

Slow to reproduce, megalodon nurseries likely contributed to the success - and later demise - of this iconic top predator, the authors discovered

Georgia standing the reconstruction of
a Megalodon Jaw at the Smithsonian.

Nursery areas are fundamental for the success of many marine species and play a key role in maintaining viable adult populations, the researchers explained.

As part of the study, the international team - from the US and UK - examined the size-class structure of the extinct gigantic shark through these potential nursery sites.

Otodus megalodon is the largest shark to have ever lived, with body length estimates of up to 50–60 feet for the largest adult individuals.

People say that the most of the Megalodon teeth found in our area are small, 1-3 inches, suggesting that the region may have been a nursery area. This was before the Chesapeake Bay existed, and the whole region was an Atlantic coastal zone. Given the abundance of fossils, from shells to fish and whales, it was clearly a very productive area. Even a Meg wasn't born big enough to take on a whale.

It frustrates me, though, that an article like this doesn't at least list the areas the scientists identified as Meg nurseries.

Election 2020: ‘Biggest Presidential Theft’ Since 1824

I guess I need to do this. After doing an "Evil" level Sudoku in under 9 minutes, and getting a Word Wipe score over 35,000 my brain should be adequately warmed up, but I'm not really feeling it.

So where were we? An interesting update, sort of, on the story regarding a raid on servers in Germany that may be related to the election, from Andrea Widberg at AmThink,  New reports about election manipulation read like a Tom Clancy novel. If it going to help it needs to come out soon.

On Friday, a retired top Air Force intelligence analyst stated with certainty during an interview that special forces had secured a CIA-run facility in Germany that had computers showing election manipulation. If this report is real, we are witnessing the biggest coup attempt, sabotage, and treason in American history. No matter what, though, because this report is out there and comes from serious people, it deserves serious investigation.

I have no idea whether this raid happened. Its having taken place, however, is consistent with my ruminations about Trump’s peculiarly-timed shake-up at the Pentagon: Firing defense secretary Mark Esper and replace him with Christopher Miller, a special forces man; moving special forces into their own command, rather than having them function as subsets of other military branches; and firing potentially disloyal members of the civilian Defense Policy Board. These actions indicated that Trump was clearing the decks for something big.

In this post, I’ll sum up the most recent reports about events in Germany, although without taking any stand as to their veracity because I can’t take a stand. I don’t know enough.
. . .
For those of us sitting in our homes, it’s impossible to tell if we’re witnessing treason or fiction. We know only that the doddering Joe Biden who campaigned from his basement could never garner the most votes in American history.

Ten Years After

Ten years ago today, around 7 PM, I pushed the submit button on the First  Post for A View From the Beach:

This is the first post of my new toy, A View from the Beach. I intend it as something of a journal, but I hope that others may find value in its content. I may discuss science, fishing, music or politics, or I may post a picture from a walk on the beach. You are welcome to join in on the comments. For today, a picture from the beach.

Apparently, not too much has changed. Oh, We've gotten older, and I retired from being an active scientist, to become a mere commenter. Our health is pretty good, considering, although I've experienced some "interesting" complications with my eyes, which I've thoroughly documented. I Can See Clearly Now...Ah, the Joys of Aging...The Joys of Aging - Part Deux...The Joys of Aging - Part Trois...,  The Joys of Aging: Part Quatre . . . and So Here It Is . . .. My eyes have been more or less stable since then, and although I have huge floaters in my left eye, the right eye is very good, and I consistently test around 20/20 with my glasses.

Along the way, I have lost both of my parents, not particularly unexpectedly, and acquired three grandchildren, Graham, Miles and Gabrielle (aka Gabby).

Georgia and I still live in the same house near the shores of Chesapeake Bay, and we still walk the beach with a Siberian Husky named Skye, albeit a different husky.

Along the way, I've accumulated some 16,339 posts,  7,627,823 hits (as of this instant), and 2,072 comments. I'm currently averaging about 2,300 hits daily, most of which come to older posts via Google or other search engines, I assume.

You can see at least two times that fairly sudden drops in the hits occurred. I assume this is due to changes in Google search algorithm.

I haven't quite achieved Althouse's standard of at least one post a day; a few times travelling, and one internet outage prevented that, but on the long term, I manage 3-4 a day. I try to have a post on the Chesapeake Bay nearly every day, which may be just pictures from a walk at the beach, or a post on news which interests me from the Chesapeake Bay news service. In the past several years, especially since retirement, I have had one major political post each day, usually in the AM. These started with Obamacare Schadenfreude, then Clinton.com, Reasons Trump was Elected, Russiagate and recently Election 2020.

My most popular posts, are of course, the "Rule 5" (everybody loves a pretty girl) posts, which I try to have one every morning for the morning eye opener. although, I may get multiples if the news offers a juicy opportunity. This has been assisted by Wombat-socho at the The Other McCain, who posts a list of Rule 5 posts weekly. The singly most popular post of all time, head and shoulders above all the rest for some weird reason, is this Zombie post, even though it isn't as racy as many others.

I considered ending this at 10 years. It does consume a lot of time that I could be fishing or playing with Gabby. But I've decided to continue, at least for now.

For an example of an inarguably corrupt purchased pardon we turn to Bill Clinton and Marc Rich. However, despite investigations and hearings no crimes were charged.

For pardons arguably linked to obstruction of justice we can turn to Bush 41. His Christmas Eve pardon of Caspar Weinberger effectively ended the seemingly immortal Walsh investigation into Iran/Contra. And of course Wild Bill Clinton had entrants in the obstruction category, notably Susan McDougal of Whitewater fame.

"... on the former Trump campaign associate that relied upon British ex-spy Christopher Steele’s discredited dossier to obtain approval from the FISA court."

The Washington Examiner reports Carter Page sues James Comey, Andrew McCabe, the FBI, and others for $75M

Carter Page sued fired FBI Director James Comey, fired FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe, the FBI, and others involved in the improper Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act snooping on the former Trump campaign associate that relied upon British ex-spy Christopher Steele’s discredited dossier to obtain approval from the FISA court.

Page filed the 59-page complaint with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Friday, with his lawyers saying that he “seeks relief herein for Defendants’ multiple violations of his Constitutional and other legal rights in connection with unlawful surveillance and investigation of him by the United States Government.”

The lawsuit was filed against Comey, McCabe, the bureau, the Justice Department, fired FBI deputy assistant director of counterintelligence Peter Strzok, former FBI lawyer Lisa Page, former supervisory special agent Joseph Pientka, FBI agent Stephen Somma, and supervisory intelligence analyst Brian Auten, with Page condemning the "unjustified and illegal actions" and "unlawful spying” and arguing that the court should award him “compensatory and special damages” for no less than $75 million.

DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s December 2019 report on FISA abuse concluded that the FBI’s investigation was filled with serious missteps and concealed exculpatory information from the FISA court. Horowitz criticized the bureau for at least 17 “significant errors and omissions” discovered in the Page FISA applications spanning from fall 2016 to summer 2017. The FISA filings relied upon a salacious, unverified, and now-discredited dossier compiled by Steele, who’d been hired by Fusion GPS, which in turn was hired by Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee through the Perkins Coie law firm.

Page was never charged with any wrongdoing.

Filed under suits I want to succeed, but probably won't because they're filed in the DC Circus.

Election 2020: Pennsylvania - A Crack in the Blue Wall?

From the Wombat's In The Mailbox: 11.27.20 (Afternoon Edition) Vox Popoli offers An Analysis Of The Powell Filing In GA.

. . . I have no idea about the likelihood of success. Plaintiffs make an excellent argument. That is, what they allege is indeed serious. It's not a complaint that you read and wonder "What the hell were these lawyers smoking when they filed this?" Maybe Plaintiffs are wrong. Maybe they can't prove what they allege. But that is different than "what were they smoking?" If they can prove what they allege, the court has the power to grant their request to de-certify the election and audit the votes. But courts are generally loathe to overturn elections. If the Plaintiffs' evidence (key word is evidence, not allegations) ultimately comes down to really improbable voting patterns, Plaintiffs are not likely to win. Plaintiffs need to be able to say, "Here is how voter fraud occurred and here are the number of fraudulent votes cast/changed/deleted/added because of that fraud." If they can't do both, or at least do both in sufficient numbers to cast Biden's margin of victory into doubt in Georgia, they won't win. If they can do both, this case will get real interesting real fast. If this court finds that Dominion voting machines do not keep records that allow an audit of votes in a Presidential election despite a clear federal statute to do so, then I truly have no idea where this ends up. In that case, I am truly glad that RBG is not on the court any longer.

Rule 5 Saturday - Arctic Fox - Sienna Guillory

Somehow recently we started watching Fortitude on Prime a story about mysterious happenings in the far north, and saw Sienna Guillory. Good enough for a Rule 5 Post:

Sienna Tiggy Guillory (born 16 March 1975) is an English actress and former model. She is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Jill Valentine in several entries of the Resident Evil action-horror film series. Other prominent roles include elf princess Arya Dröttningu in the fantasy-adventure film Eragon, and the title role in the TV miniseries Helen of Troy. She has also taken on starring roles in popular TV shows including Fortitude, Stan Lee's Lucky Man, and Luther.
As Natalie Yelburton in Fortitude
Born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England, Guillory is the daughter of the American folk guitarist Isaac Guillory and his first wife, English model Tina Thompson, whom he married in 1973. Her father was the son of American and Turkish-Jewish parents and born at the Guantanamo naval base in Cuba.

Her parents moved to Fulham, London when Guillory was two, then later to Norfolk when she was 11. At the age of ten, she went to stay with cousins in Mexico to learn Spanish.

As Jill Valentine in Resident Evil
Guillory explained that she "became an actor because I wanted to know what it was like to be other people. Because possibly I don't like myself", and later said "I hate acting, really hate it. I kind of fell into it sideways ... I started acting because I got offered a job when I was 16, and they wanted to pay me £8,000, and we'd always lived on Family Support". She went on to say that her frustration with later film roles left her bitter, but after seeing Helen Mirren on stage she was inspired again.
. . .
Before becoming a model to support her acting career, Guillory waited tables at a club. In an interview in 2000, she said about the experience "Supporting my acting habit with waitressing was probably the most useful thing I've done."

Election 2020: Is The Kraken Floundering?

Lots of discussion about Sidney Powell's multiple lawsuits in several state alleging massive voter fraud of different kinds, with affidavits to back them up affectionately dubbed, "the Kraken". Twitchy,  Sidney Powell reportedly files lawsuits in Michigan and Georgia; UPDATE 'Shipwreckedcrew' at Red State, Sidney Powell Shoves Her Chips 'All in' With Georgia Complaint Alleging Rigged Election -- Part One.

On behalf of several Republican Presidential Electors, Powell — joined as Plaintiffs’ counsel by famed Atlanta trial attorney Lin Wood — filed a 104-page complaint that begins with the allegations that the Dominion voting system sold to Georgia was originally designed for, and used by, Hugo Chavez to ensure that he never lost an election as President of Venezuela. The complaint alleges that various uncontrolled and open parts of the software architecture are designed so that real-time activity logs can be modified to delete activity involving vote switching and/or addition/subtraction from the accumulated vote totals in such a way that the activity would not appear on the activity logs as part of an audit.

She alleges that video from the State Farm Arena in Fulton County, where vote counting activity involving mail-in ballots took place, documents that a false claim of a water main break was used to evacuate the area of all election workers and observers involved in the counting of ballots for a period of two hours, but that a small number of election workers remained behind working at the computer terminal on vote tallying without any supervision or observation by outsiders for nearly three hours.

The number of votes likely cast be people from out of state, which can be documented, and is sufficient cover the margin between Biden and Trump.

“To me, the easiest way to reach that goal is something much simpler alleged in the complaint at paragraph 121: That thousands of specific, identifiable voters, cast ballots after they moved out of state as evidenced in their registration in a national database, and may even have cast votes in their new states also which can easily be checked against the other state’s records,” she added.

Thanksgiving at the Beach

Skye and I took off for beach around 11:30. You couldn't ask for a nice Thanksgiving day, low 70s, sunny, with a few fluffy clouds and no wind. Short sleeve weather (and shorts if you wanted them) in late November.

Rounding the bend into the harbor.
We met up with Georgia at the beach, after the pumpkin pie finished.

Despite a very high tide, we did OK with teeth, 27 if I counted right, two crab claws and a Tilly bone. Nothing terribly exciting, but a few good ones.

Thanksgiving Russiagate: Flynn Pardoned

Of course, there would have been no need for a pardon if Judge Emmett Sullivan weren't being a partisan, pompous ass and delaying the DOJ's desire to dismiss the case because it was pursued by a corrupt prosecutors.

First, from Anxious: Scoop: Trump tells confidants he plans to pardon Michael Flynn, echoed by Capt. Ed at Hot Air. Axios: Trump Plans To Pardon Flynn Before Leaving Office. You can read Capt. Ed's version if you don't want to give clicks to Axios. Also Althouse calls Least surprising scoop.

Rogue "judge" Sullivan got what he wanted -- he illegally, unconstitutionally acted as prosecutor against Sullivan and refused to dismiss his case, thus forcing Trump to pardon him, and denying Flynn the simple dropping of charges he was entitled to.

The Deep State must be uprooted -- by any means necessary.

You might remember that Sullivan was ordered by the DC Circus to deal with this expeditiously, but instead he dithered another 3 months to put the election behind him.

Flynn has been harried by prosecutors and judges and had his name besmirched (including through unethical leaks, to the potential harm of national security) without solid evidence of having committed a crime.

Flynn was pressured into pleading guilty to perjury (actually, a near equivalent) in order to spare his son a prison sentence. Yet the supposed perjury itself, as we now know, was not considered a lie by the FBI agents whose queries precipitated the allegation. Moreover, the subject about which he supposedly perjured himself, the conversation with the Russian diplomat, already had been deemed by investigators as containing an “absence of any derogatory information or lead information.”

In other words, they weren’t sure that he lied, and they didn’t think he had done anything wrong in the first place that he would want to lie about.

Two top Republicans on the Senate Intelligence Committee have asked the Justice Department to declassify notes from an FBI interview of Miles Taylor, who authored the anonymous New York Times op-ed about the resistance to President Trump within his own administration.

Taylor was interviewed as a possible witness in the Crossfire Hurricane probe and is identified in briefing notes intended for former FBI director James Comey dated May 1, 2017. It is not clear who wrote the notes, which span eleven pages and are heavily redacted, and were released by the Justice Department on October 30 of this year. Taylor’s role in the Flynn probe is also unclear.

Senator Ron Johnson (R., Wis.), head of the committee, and colleague Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) sent a letter to Attorney General William Barr on Monday requesting the declassification.

“We request all records relating to the FBI’s interview of Miles Taylor, including all 302s and notes, to better understand his role in the Flynn investigation,” Johnson and Grassley wrote.

The 2017 briefing notes refer to a “witness interview of Miles Taylor” in connection with Flynn Intel Group, the lobbying firm of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and the group’s work in Turkey. Taylor was a staffer on the House Committee on Homeland Security at the time, and met with Flynn’s firm on several occasions in October 2016. In 2017, Taylor moved to the Department of Homeland Security, where he wrote an anonymousop-ed for the Times touting himself as part of a “resistance” within the Trump administration.

Andy Weissass is not pleased:

But Andrew Weissmann, a former member of the special counsel team, tweeted, "Trump's abuse of the pardon power undermines the crown jewel of our democracy: the rule of law."

Of course, at the NYT, Andy Weissass is still calling for Trump's prosecution. Should Trump Be Prosecuted? Strictly a rhetorical question on his part, Of course he wants to.  Or you can have Hot Air's clip. Breitbart, Mueller Investigator Andrew Weissmann Calls for Biden DOJ to Prosecute Trump. How many bites of that apple does he think he's entitled to?

Weissmann’s op-ed comes after the former Mueller prosecutor compared President Trump to Nazi Germany Dictator Adolf Hitler.

“For those people who say we should appease Trump, how did that approach go for Neville Chamberlain,” he wrote on Twitter.
