Garland Accepts Blame for Mar-a-Lago Raid

AG Merrick Garland spoke yesterday, on the matter of the raid on Mar-a-Lago. He didn't say much. You can see it here:

To summarize it, we did it because we had, to find secret, sensitive stuff written on Melania's underwear and nobody is above the law. He did say, he personally authorized the raid (although, many doubt that, for good reason), and, after being sued, said he would ask the court to unseal the search warrant and the receipt showing the list of materials confiscated, and by implication, said he only authorized the raid as the "least intrusive" means of obtaining the materials they wanted. The affidavit used in the warrant will still stay secret, is my take away. Not The Bee, BREAKING: Biden Gestapo Chief Merrick Garland says he personally authorized FBI raid on president's rival Trump, says you can totally trust the government.  Ace, Corrupt Attorney General of the Democrat Party Merrick Garland To Deliver Statement Simultaneously Empty and Deceitful Any Moment Now, ABC News: Anger Over Raid is Just Nazis and White Supremacists Angry At Jewish AG ""Justice." Via the Wombat's In The Mailbox: 08.11.22,  Am Power, Attorney General Merrick Garland Approved Decision to Seek Search Warrant for Mar-a-Lago . John Sexton at Haut Hair, AG Garland: I'm filing a motion to unseal the Mar-a-Lago search warrant (and I approved seeking the warrant).   Sundance at CTH, DOJ Files Motion to Unseal FBI Trump Raid Search Warrant and Property Seizure Receipt. As usual, Althouse reads NYT so you don't need to, "Mr. Garland’s decision to make a public appearance came at an extraordinary moment in the [Justice] department’s 152-year history..." "Mr. Garland did not say how, or when, it became clear to his team that the 15 boxes of material turned over by Mr. Trump earlier this year was insufficient. But he cast his decision to approve the warrant as an exigent necessity." Matt Margolis at PJ Media VIP, After Garland's Statement, Does Anyone Else Smell a Cover Up?. Um, yep. 'Bonchie' at DNC, Merrick Garland's Presser Suggests the Resistance Libs Got Played, "They thought they finally had the bad orange man and it looks like Garland’s raid was nothing more than a failed hit under the guise of recovering some documents the National Archives (run by a Biden appointee and likely hack) wanted. Yes, it was meant to embarrass Trump, but it doesn’t look like it did anything to prove some kind of larger criminal conspiracy." At Front Page, Larry O'Connor calls Merrick Garland a Petty, Vindictive Little Man, "Using his department to punish the enemies of the Left."' Phil Bump at WaPoo claims Citizen Trump may have broken a law that President Trump made a felony. "You can see how Trump absconding with classified material to Mar-a-Lago would facially violate the law as articulated. So Trump’s allies have already been offering a rationalization: He had declassified everything he took to Mar-a-Lago." Dan McLaughlin at NR, (cited at Haut Hair) wants you to know  How to prosecute Donald Trump

At Da Wire, Eric Trump Speaks Out About Mar-A-Lago Raid, Claims 30 Agents Refused To Hand Over Warrant, "Turn off all security cameras." John Sexton at Haut Hair, June visit to Mar-a-Lago included a subpoena for documents  "The only thing I’m fairly certain of is that there’s not enough goodwill that anyone is going to take the FBI’s, the DOJ’s or Trump’s word for what happened." Guy Benson at Red State thinks New Details About the Mar-a-Lago Raid Are Truly Stunning, If True. Matt Vespa at Town Hall, You’ve Got to Be Kidding: These Are the Items That Led to the FBI Raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago "Descriptions of items that were improperly taken to Mar-a-Lago include a cocktail napkin, a phone list, charts, slide decks, letters, memos, maps, talking points, a birthday dinner menu, schedules and more, this person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss details of the ongoing investigation." Joseph Klein at Front Page, A Search Warrant and Double Standards.  Lloyd Billingsley at Am Great, pens Dems ’n’ Docs "In looking at the capers of the Clintons’ cronies, if Americans believed the rule of law is at stake, it would be hard to blame them. "

So, at this point, the question remains, what was the FBI looking for at Mar-a-Lago (or, what did they need to plant, and then "find")? Of course, the ostensible reason is "classified documents); Joe Cunninghang at Red State, Startling New Report Indicates FBI Was Looking for Extremely Sensitive Documents at Trump's Mar-a-Lago. Leading theorists think that while the "classified material" are what they were looking for, their real goal was to find something to link Trump the Jan. 6 directly. Kylee Griswold at Da Fed has a list of 20 Things The Feds Probably Planted In The Boxes They Took From Trump’s House. "4. An Inscription in a 2021 Playboy Calendar. It’s the only marking in the otherwise crisp planner. On the little square for Jan. 6, it reads, “Remember to do insurrection.”" A hypothesis cropped up yesterday, like mice in moldy rags, was that they were looking for some kind of nuclear weapons secret. Sundance at CTH, Watch for Falling Anvils, The Washington Post Claims FBI Raid Was Looking for Super-Secret Nuclear Intel in Mar-a-Lago. Reform Club, Rationale or Pretext? Sundance has, as usual, a long discourse on the reasons for the raid, Why Did the DOJ and FBI Execute the Raid on Trump, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4. At the risk of leaving out something important, his theory boils down to the notion that Donald Trump carried out material pertaining to the Russiagate origin, that would be deeply damaging to the intelligence committee. He attempted to declassify it prior to leaving office, but Bill Barr, and the intelligence community refused to go along. The raid was an attempt to get that information back, and make it impossible for Trump to use it (basically as blackmail material). I'm kind of leaning in that direction.

The NYT, cited by Haut Hair, claims Trump allies warn senior Republicans against criticizing the FBI "Some senior Republicans have been warned by allies of Mr. Trump not to continue to be aggressive in criticizing the Justice Department and the F.B.I. over the matter because it is possible that more damaging information related to the search will become public." Also, 'Bonchie' reports FBI Dir. Christopher Wray Finally Responds to Raid of Trump Residence. He say 'Don't blame us, we're just being good Germans soldiers'. He should be more careful with the word "deplorable"
Even Ankush Kardori at NYT, cited at Haut Hair thinks Americans deserve to know what the DOJ is up to. I&I, Welcome To Biden’s Police State, Part III. Matt Taibbi, Welcome to the Third World, "The FBI really better have something "pulverizing" on Trump, because otherwise we've just witnessed one of the dumbest moves in the history of politics." Rep. Andy Biggs at Am Great, Joe Biden’s FBI Raid

"'If you are allowed to launch coup after coup against the duly elected President that the people of the United States fairly and freely elected, then it's not a coup. It's now just Part of How the System Works."  Also at Am Great the great Victor Davis Hanson, FBI, R.I.P.? "The agency has become dangerous to Americans and an existential threat to their democracy and rule of law. " JB Shurk at Am Think thinks The Federal Government Refuses to Listen. Shawn Fleetwood at Da Fed, Republicans Have No Idea What Time It Is, "Following the FBI’s raid of Trump, congressional Republicans are doing what they always do: issuing meaningless statements." At Am Spec, Scott McKay writes Morphine Mitch and McCarthy Aren’t the Same on Mar-a-Lago, "One of them at least shows signs of life — and signs that he plans to fight for a GOP worthy of the name." Chris Beford at Da Fed, says Democrats Have Arrested, Prosecuted, And Raided Their Enemies. There’s Only One Way To Make Them Stop "they won’t be sorry until they’ve felt the same pain."

Also from the Wombat's In The Mailbox: 08.11.22, Victory Girls: Judge Reinhart Recused Self from Trump-Clinton Suit. One of the reasons I suspect Garland may not have been linked in ahead of the raid is the choice of Reinhart as the magistrate signing the warrant. It's pretty clear they went judge shopping and hit the bottom of the barrel before they found one to go along.

AllahPundit at Haut Hair summarizes Liz Cheney's closing argument: Election denialism is a cancer that threatens the country. Don't question your betters. Don Surber, on endorsements, Trump 180, Liz 20. From Politico, John Harris, Why Wait? Here’s Liz Cheney’s Concession Speech in Advance
“First of all, to all my friends in Wyoming and around the country, let me assure you I made peace with this moment long ago. This is not the result we wanted, but it is a victory — for everyone who believes that standing up for what’s right, for the Constitution, for the future of our democracy is more important than clinging to power or holding some fancy title. This fight is not over — it may take many years. For anyone wondering about my own future, let me say this: I will do everything in my power to make sure Donald Trump is never again near the Oval Office.”

What she means is something like this:

I still can’t believe that people in Wyoming — tough, stoical no-BS people — would turn their back on a Cheney in favor of such an obvious fraud. So, no, I’m not exactly at peace. But, yes, I saw this coming 17 months ago and once I started down the path of confronting Trump there was no turning back. Why do you think I left so much of the money gushing to me from Dems and Never Trumpers unspent in this primary — it’s the war chest that will keep me relevant on the national stage. No, I won’t ever be Speaker of the House. But no need to be too coy about it: I do plan to run for president. I’ve already dropped plenty of breadcrumbs, like that ABC interview last month when I hardly denied my interest, and I’ll soon be dropping more. Does that mean a “kamikaze run” against Trump in 2024? Or a declaration that the Republican Party for now is beyond saving, and therefore I’m leading a third-party movement? Standby — still working on my options.
