Manatee found deceased in Dundalk waterway

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking residents to report any sightings of unusual marine mammals and wildlife, after a manatee was found deceased in Dundalk.

According to the DNR, the manatee was found last week, after a citizen called to report it.

Officials say this is only the third time a deceased manatee has been found in Maryland, in recorded history.

The animal has been examined by biologists and veterinarians at the Smithsonian Institution to determine cause of death.

“With cooling weather, current Maryland water temperatures are well below a manatee’s minimum survival temperature,” said Natural Resources State Fish and Wildlife Veterinarian Cindy P. Driscoll. “We are still analyzing samples taken during the necropsy examination, which will be analyzed over the next few weeks. Until that time the cause of death remains undetermined.”

Every year, a few manatees wander up the coast, and a few enter the Bay. We had one visit Flag Harbor a few years ago. But if they stay too long, it's not a good outcome. Don't listen to that global warming nonsense, Manatees!
