Flotsam and Jetsam - Putin Comes to America

So where was I before being rudely interrupted by taking the weekend off to travel to Pennsylvania? Oh yeah, on Friday, President Trump was scheduled to meet with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin, in Alaska, with the goal of settling the Russian war against Ukraine. It went off as scheduled, with Putin being feted to a show of force as F-35s and a B2 stealth bomber while still on the tarmac. Stacy McCain takes note that After Alaska Summit Meeting, Putin Confirms Ukraine War Was Biden’s Fault. “I’d like to remind you that in 2022, during the last contact with the previous administration, I tried to convince my previous American colleague the situation should not be brought to the point of no return when it would come to hostilities,” Putin, speaking in Russian, said according to a translator. “And I said it quite directly back then that it’s a big mistake.” Matt Margolis at PJM, Did This Remark at Trump and Putin’s Presser Send Democrats Into Meltdown? At Am Great, Roger Kimball Trump-Putin Alaska Summit Shifts Talk From Ceasefire to Peace. Let that stand in for all the many headlines I'm seeing this morning about the White House meeting today. It's more optimistic than most. There are reasons to go negative before the meeting, but I think it's bad form." At Breitbart, Ukraine Closer to Peace After Trump-Putin Summit, UK Prime Minister Starmer Says. Rapid Response 47 @RapidResponse47 @SecRubio: "Putin's not going to meet with Macron, he's not going to meet with the UK... There's only one leader in the world that has any chance of bringing these two sides together... that's President Trump, and you forfeit that role the minute you put additional sanctions on." The fact that we’re talking like Donald Trump could mean that we’re starting to think like him as well." I'm reading "The Insidious Creep of Trump’s Speaking Style" by the linguist Adam Aleksic, in the NYT. "“Before the protests of the past few years, I still would’ve placed Columbia somewhat ahead of the rest of the Ivy League in terms of positive name recognition and perception of prestige, but now the brass at Low Library has to face the reality of free-fall where, Ivy League or not, Columbia has likely dropped well out of the top ten, and may now sit somewhat behind other institutions that it had never been forced to quite consider peers: Tufts, Duke, Hopkins, Chicago, Northwestern, and (egads!) maybe even some of the flagship state schools. . . ."
