New MD Striper Regs in the Nick of Time

On May 14, Maryland DNR finally published the Striped Bass fishing regulations that will govern the recreational fishery for most of the rest of the year, starting on May 16. Two days notice! New Striped Bass Regulations Effective May 16

The opening of regular striped bass season May 16 begins with new conservation-minded regulations pertaining to the use of bait, gear and hooks.

The Maryland General Assembly Joint Committee Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review Committee recently approved Maryland Department of Natural Resources regulations, which are effective now through Oct. 12, 2018.

Traditionally the season continues through Dec. 15.

Effective May 16, 2018, in Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries:

1. Anglers must use non-offset circle hooks when live-lining or chumming;
2. Anglers must use circle hooks or “J” hooks when using fish, crabs or worms as bait, or when using processed baits; and
3. The minimum size for striped bass is 19 inches.. . .

While the emergency regulations are in effect, the department is also moving forward with regulations aimed at making them permanent through the reminder of the 2018 and 2019 fishing seasons. Public comment is being accepting through May 29, 2018, with a public hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. May 17 at the Annapolis Friends Meeting House.

For the last two years, the size limit has been 20 inches for recreational anglers, which causes them to throw back large numbers of small, resulting in excess mortality. A limit of 19 inches will allow them to either keep more fish, or sort through less smalls to get their limits. Will the mortalities offset? I don't really know, but they probably have models that claim it does.
