The continuing protests in Ferguson, in the wake of the shooting of Michael Brown, have been an educational experience for the entire nation. But not all of the lessons have to do with race relations or the conduct of the police. One well known Missouri state senator, Democrat Jamilah Nasheed, showed up to join with her fellow citizens in protesting the recent violence. But despite her long record of working to enact legislation restricting the rights of gun owners, she apparently decided to bring a long a little protection of her own.I'm looking forward to the race riots in Ferguson when the cop walks free.
When Missouri state Sen. Jamilah Nasheed headed to Ferguson for a recent protest, she brought with her a legacy of supporting strict gun control legislation. As it turns out, though, she also brought along her own firearm, which has led some to characterize her as a hypocrite regarding the contentious issue…Just to make sure that we hit the Daily Double on this story, senator Nasheed seemed to be packing a little something else.
Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of the incident was the fact that authorities found a 9mm pistol and extra ammunition in her possession when they searched her. As The Blaze pointed out, the National Rifle Association has criticized a number of “anti-gun” bills she has sponsored, including legislation that would require gun-owning parents to notify their children’s schools within 30 days of their enrollment.
She refused to submit to a Breathalyzer test, and police arrested her on charges of failure to obey a police order and walking in the roadway. Upon her release Tuesday morning, Nasheed asserted that she was not intoxicated at the time of her arrest. You do have to give her credit for sticking to her story and trying to keep a theme going. After being released from jail, she insisted to reporters that her arrest was a symbolic act to promote peaceful protest. I’m not really up on the latest social consciousness lingo, so I might be missing something here, but I’m not sure what the actual symbolism is in showing up (allegedly) drunk at a protest site already rife with tension and recent incidents of gunfire with a gun. Now, if she is concealed carry permit holder, then I would obviously have no problem with her packing on general principles, but one would assume that she would have mentioned that to the police and avoided arrest.
One day you wash up on the beach, wet and naked. Another day you wash back out. In between, the scenery changes constantly.
