The United States has been one of the few bright spots for climate-change policy in recent years. Thanks to the recession, improved efficiency measures and the shale-gas boom, the nation's carbon-dioxide emissions from energy fell 12 percent between 2005 and 2012.So the growth in carbon emissions under the allegedly environmentally lenient President Bush declined, until they were actually falling, until they started increasing again under Obama. While I'm sure the recession played a part in keeping energy usage down, you can't blame the recession that started in 2008 for a decline in carbon emissions in 2005.
But the party's now officially ending, at least for those worried about global warming. In an early estimate, the U.S. Energy Information Administration says that U.S. carbon-dioxide emissions from energy sources increased 2 percent in 2013:
One day you wash up on the beach, wet and naked. Another day you wash back out. In between, the scenery changes constantly.
