The End of Summer at the Beach

Fall will begin next Saturday.  This morning, a distinct chill was in the air when we set out for the beach.  The thermometer at home said 58 F, and shorts and T-shirts were just tolerable when we started off.  There was no wind to speak of, and the sky was blue with a few light clouds.
We missed our walk yesterday because of an obligation at work, but today we met Joel and Red at 0830 as scheduled.
The Great Blue Heron posing in one of his/her usual spots.
We saw several eagles today, mostly juveniles.  I was a little slow on the draw with this one, and just got the white tail on its way past.  There was no sign of Ospreys today.  Have they flown for the season?  I guess we'll find out.
An interesting boat.  This was floating in the shallows and we stopped and talked to the couple before they set out.  A combination of inflatable and jet ski, it looks like a kind of a fun little rig, if you like jet skis, but find them a little intimidating if you happen to fall off.  It was made by Sea-Doo for a while, but is not currently being made.
A new (old) butterfly.  This one set down near the Kudzu and let me approach very close to take some photo's.  It's a Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa).  It's a rather common butterfly, but one I have not run into since I've been making a point out of collecting butterfly pictures.

Skye decided to take a dip in the scummy pool formed by the stream which fails to make it all the way across the beach in drier weather.

Not the best day for fossils (only 12 small teeth), but this tiny Snaggletooth lower was a pleasant surprise.
