Forget it Jake, It's Baltimore

NYPo, ‘Serial’ saga: Appeals court reinstates Adnan Syed’s murder conviction

An appeals court in Maryland on Tuesday reinstated the conviction and life sentence of Adnan Syed in the 1999 murder of Hai Min Lee because her family wasn’t given ample notice to attend the hearing overturning the case.

Syed, 41, served 23 years in prison for the slaying of his former girlfriend and high school classmate Lee, 18. Hit podcast “Serial” did a deep dive into Syed’s case and raised questions about whether he was the true killer — eventually leading to the conviction getting tossed in September.

But Lee’s brother, Young Lee, appealed the decision and demanded the conviction be reinstated, calling for a new hearing in Syed’s case on the grounds that the family’s rights were violated when the state failed to give them proper notice of the hearing last fall.

The Appellate Court in Maryland sided with Young Lee, reinstating the conviction and sentence against Syed until a new hearing on the state’s motion to vacate the case could be held where Lee’s family has the opportunity to attend.

This case has been a political football from the start.  I have no idea what the truth really is here, but it's pretty clear this was not justice at it's best. But it is Baltimore.

You'll Eat Bugs and Like It!

Chesapeake Bay Mag, Eastern Shore “Bug Banquet” Encourages Insects As Sustainable Food Source

Most of us know that entomology is the study of insects. But did you know that entomophagy is the study of edible insects?

Coming up next weekend, an event on Maryland’ Eastern Shore will dive into the world of insect agriculture and cuisine.

From April 3-6, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in Somerset County will feature the work of celebrity Chef Joseph Yoon of Brooklyn Bugs in New York City. Organized by people invested in sharing the benefits of insect agriculture with the larger population, the “series of adventurous events” offers a film, symposium, bug snacks, a family bug buffet, and a presentation of research conducted by UMES students. A 10-course semiformal bug banquet, prepared by Chef Yoon and the UMES Culinary Program, is the event’s grand finale.

“My vocation was, and is as a chef,” said Chef Yoon, who is also an Edible Insect Ambassador. “When I saw a UN report on edible insects and that insect agriculture was among the ways to address food security, sustainability, and climate change it provided an incredible amount of inspiration and motivation. Once I started cooking with insects, I gained a lot of media attention. Soon I began working with universities and museums and institutions that I have so much respect for.”

In 2021 Chef Yoon appeared on PBS Nova’s Edible Insects along with Ebony Jenkins, a UMES food and agricultural sciences doctoral student. As alumni of the show, they stayed in contact and discussed how they could collaborate.

At the beginning of her college studies, Jenkins wanted no parts of insects. “I was afraid of them,” she recalled. “But with my bachelor’s degree, I began to study honeybees and discovered how important they are to the environment. My son suffers from asthma and I learned that honey can combat those ailments. Had it not been for his health, I wouldn’t have pursued this course of study.”

With her Master’s, she studied pollinators and host preferences (what they like to eat and their preferred environment). Later, she took part in a competition in which she and her team repurposed empty chicken houses on the Eastern Shore for insect agriculture. “I wasn’t sure if people wanted to hear about it, but to my surprise, there’s a whole world out there.”

The phobia of eating insects in America is real,” said Chef Yoon., “until they discover that it really does taste like food.” Jenkins recalls a 2019 community event where, instead of being shunned by the squeamish, her team’s variety of flavored insects drew the most visitors.

“What we can do by sharing these ideas is to show that insects can be prepared deliciously,” said Yoon. “We can ‘bugify’ dishes that we know and love like making cricket mac and cheese or mealworm lasagna. One of the big takeaways is that we’re not trying to take away anybody’s meat. We’re trying to add something to diversify the diet with something delicious and nutritious.”

The only bugs I want to eat are lobsters and crawdads.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Merry Trumpmas! LOTT Punks AOC, Q-Man Released, Insurrection in Tennessee

For those of you who celebrate secular holidays. Stacy McCain, in all caps BREAKING: TRUMP INDICTEDWelcome to Soviet America, comrades.

You can read the whole thing. Basically, Democrats want to outlaw opposition. Trump’s real crime — why he’s actually being prosecuted — is that he beat Hillary Clinton in 2016. So now they’ve gotten one of their reliable party henchmen, Soros-funded DA Bragg, to convene a grand jury in Manhattan (where Hillary got 87% of the vote in 2016) to indict Trump on the basis of a far-fetched theory that the payment to Stormy Daniels was somehow felonious. Question: How many other men has Alvin Bragg prosecuted in Manhattan for paying money to whores?

Because I’m pretty sure this payment to the whore Stormy Daniels is only being treated as a felony by Bragg because a Republican is accused of it.

I mean, this is going to be something we’ve never seen the likes of."

Said Trump's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, quoted in "'Shocked' Donald Trump will face 34 counts of business fraud after NYC indictment: lawyer Joe Tacopina" (NY Post).

34 counts?

“We now heard 34 counts," the lawyer said, "And I guarantee you it’s going to be 34 counts when we find out next week. They’ll take each check and make that a count, perhaps, and that’s how they’ll do it because the checks are paid to Cohen."

Tacopina plans to win the case. He says, "We will humiliate them, and they will pay the price."

At Da Mail, Trump will be indicted on THIRTY counts of business fraud, sources claim, as ex-president's lawyer says he'll travel to Manhattan to be arraigned on TUESDAY

'The Democrats have lied, cheated and stolen in their obsession with trying to "Get Trump," but now they've done the unthinkable - indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant election Interference,' Trump said in an emailed statement.

'Never before in our nation's history has this been done.'

Forget It Jake, It's Baltimore

Bay Bulletin, Baltimore Blocks Ohio Train Derailment’s Toxic Waste From Being Treated, Released Into Baltimore’s Back River

When the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) went looking for wastewater treatment sites to treat and discharge the contaminated water from the Ohio derailment cleanup site, they picked one in Baltimore. Under the proposed plan, Clean Harbors of Baltimore, Inc. would treat the polluted water and it would be discharged from the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant, which just suffered an explosion and has had repeated pollution violations in recent years.

In a letter to the City of Baltimore, Clean Harbors of Baltimore, Inc. wrote that it was determined that Clean Harbors was “an optimal wastewater treatment site to treat and discharge the wastewater collected from rainwater, collected water, and stream water above and below the cleanup site of the Norfolk Southern Railroad derailment in East Palestine, Ohio that occurred February 3, 2023.”

The letter went on to explain that the main substance of concern in the 675,000 gallons of wastewater is vinyl chloride. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vinyl chloride can irritate the eyes, mucous membranes and respiratory tract. Chronic exposure can cause permanent liver damage and cancer, as well as neurologic symptoms.

After the plan was made public, environmental groups and Baltimore City leaders quickly pushed back. The city’s waterway watchdog group, Blue Water Baltimore, put out a strongly worded statement, saying in part:

“The area surrounding Clean Harbors already suffers environmental injustices related to lead paint exposure, air toxics and cancer risk, hazardous waste proximity, and more. It is unclear why the U.S. EPA chose this already-overburdened community to accept even more toxic contamination, and we demand to know why they believe it is appropriate to send the toxic waste that is too dangerous for East Palestine to the shores of Baltimore.”

Pointing out that a critical facility at the wastewater treatment plant is still damaged from last week’s explosion and fire, Blue Water Baltimore writes, “It is entirely inappropriate to further stress-test this facility by adding even more toxic contaminants to the waste-stream from wastewater produced outside of the watershed.”

After expressing his own concerns, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott moved to modify Clean Harbors’ discharge permit, denying them their request to treat and discharge the train derailment’s wastewater into Back River, which flows into the Chesapeake Bay.

So I look up Clean Harbors Inc, and found:

This facility serves Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic United States as a treatment facility for a variety of industrial wastewater and as a transfer station for other industrial waste including flammables, oxidizers, poisons and reactives. The facility also provides a unique liquid/liquid extraction system for treating organic contaminated wastewater. Waste not treated on-site is processed at other Company-owned sites or approved ultimate disposal sites.

Sounds like the perfect site to perform the work, and it might even help support some badly needed jobs in Baltimore. There's no real evidence provided that the material from Ohio is worse than what the company already treats and releases, or whether significant pollution will be released. The seems like a knee jerk reaction to a perfectly normal commercial transaction in the name of "environmental justice". I would think Clean Harbors Inc. might have a cause of action against the city.

I was also reminded of a passage from Alice's Restaurant Massacree:

We got up there, we found all the garbage in there, and we decided it'd be a friendly gesture for us to take the garbage down to the city dump. So We took the half a ton of garbage, put it in the back of a red VW Microbus, took shovels and rakes and implements of destruction and headed On toward the city dump.

Well we got there and there was a big sign and a chain across across the Dump saying, "Closed on Thanksgiving." And we had never heard of a dump Closed on Thanksgiving before, and with tears in our eyes we drove off Into the sunset looking for another place to put the garbage.

We didn't find one. Until we came to a side road, and off the side of the Side road there was another fifteen foot cliff and at the bottom of the Cliff there was another pile of garbage. And we decided that one big pile is better than two little piles, and rather than bring that one up we decided to throw our's down.

Today, the ATF showed up with 16 agents, most from out-of-state from cities like LA and San Francisco, to “inspect” Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, GA. This visit was unprecedented. The sheer amount of agents from the bluest parts of the country is unusual and unnecessary to conduct a routine audit. This is a prime example of Joe Biden and the Democrats weaponizing federal agencies to silence and intimidate their political opponents. I fear this is just the beginning and they are directly targeting our Second Amendment and our right to protect and defend our families. I’m proud to have joined my colleagues to do our job and conduct Congressional Oversight on this highly suspect “inspection.”

Ha*Ash is an American Latin pop duo from Lake Charles, Louisiana. The band was formed in 2002 by sisters Hanna Nicole (born 1985) and Ashley Grace (born 1987). The group's name is an portmanteau of letters from their first names. They have released five studio albums, with the most recent, 30 de Febrero, being released in 2017. From 2014 to 2017, all of their singles received at least a gold certification from the Mexican Association of Producers of Phonograms and Videograms.

In addition to Latin pop, Ha*Ash incorporates country pop, pop rock, and singer-songwriter styles into their music, and they have cited artists such as Shania Twain, Loretta Lynn, and The Chicks as influences. They are also known for their philanthropy and social activism, including their work on behalf of children. In 2007, Ha*Ash founded the nonprofit organization Fondo Ha*Ash, which supports immigrants and children suffering from HIV/AIDS, among other causes.

Ha*Ash has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.

Hanna Nicole PƩrez (June 25, 1985) and Ashley Grace PƩrez (January 27, 1987), were born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, United States, to Antonio and Mathilda PƩrez (nƩe Mosa). Their grandfather is of Mexican descent, originally from San Luis Potosƭ, and their grandmothers were of German and Spanish ancestry. The family had been living in Lake Charles for generations. Hanna and Ashley have two siblings and two half-siblings, but due to their proximity in age, the two sisters grew up closer to one another than to any of their siblings.

They began performing in church (Pine Grove Baptist Church of DeQuincy) at the ages of 5 and 4. Because their father worked outside the United States, Hanna and Ashley spent half of each year in Mexico City and half in Lake Charles.

Beach Report 3/29/23 - First Osprey of the Year

Not much of a photo but it was the first Osprey (bird) we've seen at the beach this year. Traditionally, in MD, Ospreys are supposed to arrive around St. Patrick's Day, but in our experience, it's often a week or two later at our beach.
Skye and I were on our own, Georgia had just had her eye exam, and her eyes were dilated and light sensitive. The tide was low, but not very low, if you know what I mean. At least we got around rocks up to Matoaka.
I only found 8 teeth, and nothing grand, unless you count a tiny, but perfectly shaped Sand Tiger.

Flotsam and Jetsam - Gnashing of Teeth over Nashville, IRS 'Drops In' on Matt Taibbi, No 'Trumpmas' This Week

Not shockingly, the conversation is all over the shooting of 3 children and 3 adults, by a transactivist, who was in turn killed by police. Body cam footage  here, here and here. It appears the police were fast and efficient, with none of the hesitancy shown at Parkland or Uvalde. Good job. From Beege Wellborn at Hat Hair, A paean to toxic masculinity: Heroes run TO the danger. From the Wombat's In The Mailbox: 03.28.23 (Evening Edition, Louder With Crowder, Nashville Police Release Bodycam Footage Of Shooting Response And It’s Absolutely Heroic,  From Fox, Who are the Nashville school shooting victims?

For Stacy McCain, the shooting confirms his long standing belief, Nashville Shooting: Expert on Violence Agrees That Crazy People Are Dangerous. Yes, trans people are crazy, by any rational definition (don't expect a rational definition from today's medical establishment, they're too complicit), but only a small fraction of the trans community is this crazy. How was this rejection?" At Twitchy, Daily Mail exclusive: Nashville school shooter was rejected by her Christian parents. Beege Wellborn at Hat Hair wonders What to do about all this "rage" from trans types. Honestly, I don't understand all the "trans" rage. Yes, they do get "misgendered" at times, which is all their fault for trying unnaturally bend the language to their will. Languages don't work like that. Is is because we resent, and resist their attempts to impose and encourage their gender bending agenda on our youth? Damn right. Do they want free gender reassignment treatment? Too bad. Pay for it. Casey Chalk at Am Spec, Why I’m afraid of transphobia "The state coercing people into abandoning their consciences does create genuine fear." Capt. Ed at Hat Hair, "I’m tired of all the ‘-phobia’ claims. It’s an old Soviet trick dressed up for Western societies: to declare opposition to the party line as a sign of psychiatric illness, either neurosis or psychosis." That seems to be a common pattern in many of the these shootings. They did not enter through an unlocked side door.  Matt Margolis at PJM, MSM Apologizes for 'Misgendering' Transgender School Shooter. John Sexton at Hat Hair, NBC Out: 'Fear pervades Tennessee's trans community' "On the one hand if conservatives get angry about a mass shooting of children by a deranged trans woman they’re responsible for an incipient backlash against all trans people. On the other hand, the White House and the media are stoking anger at Republicans and no one at NBC News will write an article saying it could lead to a violent backlash against them." Althouse, I'm going to read "Fear pervades Tennessee's trans community amid focus on Nashville shooter's gender identity." "At NBC News. . . .  It sounds as though everyone is afraid of violence. "Payne suggests that Uncle Joe is engaged in an intentional tradeoff in anticipation of a tough general election in 2024. In other words, he could be knowingly pushing down his own approval numbers for a reason. Does that sound crazy? Of course it does. But bear with me for a moment and it might make more sense." Roger Kimball at da Spectator, cited by Hat Hair, Biden knows Kamala's usless (sic) -- but he's stuck with her. Capt. Ed, "It’s not just Biden who’s stuck with Harris. Democrats are equally stuck, even though it’s dawning on them that her catastrophic face-plant in 2019 was no fluke. They can’t push her off the ticket for 2024 if Biden runs, and they may not be able to push her aside if Biden chooses to retire. Either would create a massive rift within the identity-Marxist Democrat Party base and could cripple their congressional/Senate elections in 2024, too."
