We Went for a Walk

We stayed home today for the memorial service for a friend today, but before I left I took Skye on a walk around the neighborhood.

Georgia's attempt to out do Van Gogh's Irises.
A native azalea blooming in the woods behind our house.  Looking here, it's not entirely clear which species it is but Rhododendron periclymenoides seems like a good fit (except the range map shows none in Calvert County),
An Eastern Dogwood in full bloom.
Lots of Mayapple, fully spread, but no apples yet.
Native American Bamboo, called River Cane or Canebreak.  You find dense patches of it here and there.  Supposedly they supplied Indians Native American with arrow shafts.
A tangle of trees knocked down by Hurricane Irene (really only a tropical storm here).  In this patch, most of the big trees went down.  It's a marshy area, so maybe the ground was softer than other places, or maybe it had a microburst or tornado embedded in the storm.  If a tropical storm did this, I don't want a hurricane.
A crow giving us the evil eye as we walked past.

  1. About your "River Cane" any chance you can fit 5 or 6 8' lengths into a envelope and send it to me?

I'm looking to make an Atlatl and need shafts.

    :)
