MDE Nixes Cross County Connecter - Saves Mattawoman Creek

The Cross County Connector, a long sought after four-lane highway to improve east to west traffic in Charles County, Md., has been denied a permit to be built by the Maryland Department of the Environment.

Environmentalists say the decision will save the Mattawoman Creek watershed, considered one of the best nurseries for migratory fish in the entire Chesapeake Bay.

The project would have filled in fresh-water wetlands, disturbed thousands of feet of stream and cleared almost 74 acres of forest.

Charles County commissioners say the turndown was not unexpected, but better transportation is still high on the needs list.
I heard this yesterday from Capt. Mike Starrett, a friend of mine, who guides extensively in Mattawoman Creek and the nearby Potomac River.  I guess I could have gone ahead and posted it, but I wanted to see it in "print".

Mattawoman Creek is indeed a gloriously undeveloped creek on the Potomac just south of Washington D.C.  I have fished it several times, mostly with Mike, and it is a true treasure, especially considering its proximity to D.C.

Here is a previous post from a spring fishing trip last year.  I have also posted one of Mike's pictures of Northern Snakeheads from Mattawoman.
