Fireworks at the Beach, July 4, 2011

The crowd starts to assemble.
The communities of Long Beach and Calvert Beach (and most of the other small beach communities) have a tradition of unofficial fireworks displays down at the beach.  For the last several years we have gone to these rather than the larger officially sanctioned displays at places like Solomons.  I charged up the Nikon, and found the tripod and off we went:

One of the first of the night

From the beach you can see many displays around the Bay, as far north as Breezy Point, and as far south as Cove Point, and across the Bay at Taylor's Island and St. Michaels

As usual, click the pictures to enlarge:

I stood on on of the small sand dunes by the volleyball court, and used the tripod to help steady the camera.  Mostly I just watched for the trail of sparks from a rocket going up and tried to swivel it around and get it pointed in the right spot before triggering it ahead of the explosion.  I got a lot of blanks too, but over 75 pictures I moved into the "keeper" folder.

Mostly I shot a 2 second exposure at F11, but some of the exposures were 20 seconds, to allow me to get multiple fireworks in one shot.

The overcast sky helped keep the ambient light down - last year a 20 second exposure at night looked like a late twilight, but this year, it was essentially black.
