Beach Report 1/15/11

We begged off from our morning walk with Skye and did some chores, and waited for the tide to turn.

This little guy, and a friend were working the waters edge when we arrived. I'm not really sure which sandpiper this is, but I'm guessing Semipalmated, although I wouldn't be sure it's not a Sanderling. They look pretty similar in winter.

Today was sunny and warm by recent standards, getting up towards 40F! The wind was pretty light from SSW, which is a friendly direction for us. However, the tide was high, which force us to take the stairs up to Calvert Beach to get around the narrow spot. But that also gets us up to the top of the cliff for a vista.

On the narrow beach, the recent thaw and refreeze left the beach above the high tide mark a sheet of solid ice. Skye skidded around on it, but insisted on hunting at the edge of the brush, hoping for a ground hog out of hibernation, I guess.

The dead deer we found last week is still there.  We disturbed a cloud of Turkey Vultures as we approach, and as you can see, the scavengers have been active all week, but there's still plenty of food at the buffet.

On the way back, we met one of Skye's buddies, Buddy. My only shot was badly blurred, but when fiddling in GIMP to see if I could fix it, like they do on TV, I came up with this, and decided to use it.  You get the spirit.

Skye and Buddy take a break from running and beg for a treat.  Fortunately, Skye is not (or at least rarely) a jealous dog, and doesn't mind sharing treats with friends.
